"THE SIXTIES ALBUM" REVIEW
by Georgios SidiropoulosReleased by Sanctuary Records
![]() Why bother write anything about this 3CD / 75-song compilation I hear you cry! Simply because the '60's was one of the greatest decades in musical history back to life! With a track listing that reads like a who's who of 1960s music, there is something for all fans of the era that changed the face of popular culture forever. Granted that you get lots of poppy passable stuff as well, but if truth be told you also get lots of excellent classic songs that had a profound influence on many Rock, Hard Rock and punk bands. I will try to refresh my memory as much as possible and try to give you some examples. Hope that I will be as accurate as possible: "First Cut Is the Deepest" covered by one of my all time favoured Hard Rock band the Brits Little Angels (as a B side on their fantastic single “Too much too young”), the German Hard Rockers (and now into A.O.R) Bonfire and Sheryl Crow (don't laugh she did a good job with it). "Build Me Up Buttercup" was covered by Everclear and the amazing punk covers band Me first and the gimme gimmes "I'm A Believer" was covered by Smash Mouth "Lazy Sunday Afternoon" was covered by English hard rockers Thunder and the trendies Libertines "This Wheel's On Fire" was covered by the famous Mountain guitarist Leslie West "For Your Love" was covered by Led Zeppelin "If I Were a Carpenter" was covered by Robert Plant "When a Man Loves a Woman" was covered by one of the biggest A.O.R voices of all time Michael Bolton and Australian Hard Rocker Jimmy Barnes "Fire" was covered by The Who, the cult US Metal band Cirith Ungol (they have one of the strangest and wonderfully unique singers of all time!!), Die Krupps, The Styx man Dennis DeYoung, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Bloodhound Gang "Itchycoo Park" was covered by Blue Murder the band John Sykes created after leaving Whitesnake. "Pictures of Matchstick Men" was covered by Atrocity "Leader of the Pack" was covered by Twisted Sister and the great punks Good Riddance "Dance To the Music" was covered by Thunder "Israelites" was covered by Millencolin "Harlem Shuffle" was covered by the Japanese female punk rockers 5,6,7,8's "Let's Twist Again" was covered by Marillion "Runaway" was covered by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Me first and the gimme gimmes, Misfits, Scum Rats, Screeching Weasel and the Meteors "Let's Dance" was covered by the Ramones "Running Bear" was covered by the Stiff Little Fingers Whether we are talking about the rock 'n' roll' sounds of Del Shannon and The Shangri-Las or the modish, London beats of the Small Faces and the Kinks or the first sounds of Reggae that took off that decade with infectious ska rhythms from the likes of the Harry J Allstars and Desmond Dekker or artists that you might only just about have heard off, but never listened to, like Sandie Shaw, Petula Clark, Fleetwood Mac, The Animals, Donovan, Percy Sledge, Gene Pitney, Lonnie Donegan, Manfred Mann, this compilation is the best value for money that you can get if you are interested to find out how the music sceen was 4 decades ago.
