BLIND GUARDIAN LIVE REVIEW

BLIND GUARDIAN LIVE

Athens, Rodon Club Friday Saturday 18 & Sunday 19 May 2002

by Panayiotis Papandreopoulos

Once again Blind Guardians visit our country (for 4th time, if I remember well) and seem to have their eyes wide open (at least for us). Although they will play for 2 days in Athens and one in Thessaloniki, the Saturday concert is almost sold out. The audience consisting merely by teenagers await eagerly for the advent of the band. They begin into a chaotic atmosphere with Into The Storm followed in a panic by Welcome To Dying.

Although personally I don't like so much their the late releases compared to the previous ones the band performs pretty satisfactory and vigorously. The guitarists Marcus and especially Andre cast lethal solos, the bassist plows and Thomen Stauch storms the drums. The one who tries to excite the audience is Hansi particularly when he refers that this live is going to be recorded (Pardon me to doubt about it, however time shall tell).

Above all the concert could be characterized as the absolute live in terms of audience response. Even the most remote wall bricks were hopping and the toilette tiles were singing every song including the 3 ballads. Especially the at the Bard’s Song the audience sang so loud that Hansi sang almost nothing and offered the microphone to the public.

They played for about 110 min old and new songs. However many were dissatisfied because they didn't play classical masterpieces like: Majesty (despite the loud appeals of the audience), Journey Through The Dark, Travelers In Time, Lord of The Rings If they wanted to record a live concert in Greece they'd better had done at one of their previous appearances when they were at their prime hey days. The audience gave to the concert its significance mainly due to their enthusiasm and youthfulness (that's fine, no problem) but I would expect besides a more mature audience.

Among the others they played:

  • Into The Storm
  • Welcome To Dying
  • Nightfall
  • The Script For My Requiem
  • Valhalla
  • Under The Ice
  • Mordred’s Song
  • Punishment Divine
  • The Bard’s Song: In The Forest
  • Imagination From The Other Side
  • The Maiden And The Minstrel Knight
  • Mirror Mirror
Many thanx to Thanasis Stelakis, Evi, Xylaras and all the other chemical engineering students who attended the show.
