JAG PANZER LIVE REVIEW

JAG PANZER LIVE

Athens, Gagarin Club 205: Sunday 28/9 2003

by Panayiotis Papandreopoulos

As referred to the FAQ of their official site, Jag Panzer have tried unsuccessfully to play in Greece 3 times, but this was their lucky one. So we were eager to listen to one legendary cult band of the mid-80ties, which fortunately after a long silence flourished again in the late 90ties till now.

This concert could be characterized as small Power Metal festival, since 4 Greek supporting bands would also play. The concert begun at about 7:15 with Everdome, a sympathetic band, although the singer was a bit exaggerated. Simply good, nothing special. The baton was given to Bloodstained, who played a fast and "scrappy" Power Metal, covering (not so successfully) the "Tunes Of War". Undoubtedly the title of the worst band of the night goes to next band, the Clairvoyant mainly due to their tuneless singer. If something saved a bit the whole situation is the double guitar solos. Luckily Dream Weaver followed, who are famous here in Greece and without any hesitation made the best performance among the supporting bands. They both consist of good musicians as units and their themes are satisfactory. However they couldn't avoid two sort undesirable breaks, because the guitarist broke the strings!!!! Too violent playing actually. Among the others they played: The White Ship, Burn The Sun, Hands On The White.

After a few minutes break in order the instruments to get tuned by themselves (!!!) Jag Panzer appeared on stage. Panic among the audience. They begin with a set comprising their recent epic tracks like: Black, Iron Eagle, Take to the Sky, Viper, etc. Harry was overactive either by going up and the stage or by hoping in front of the drum set. Rikard and John give the rhythm of the sonic attack followed by the guitarists and especially Chris who rage. In a moment Harry referred to the 3 unsuccessful efforts for not having played live in Greece. They honored the Ample Destruction album by playing many song from it. (Licensed to Kill, Warfare, Symphony of Terror, Generally Hostile, The Crucifix).

They even remembered their pre- Jag Panzer days, under the name Tyrants, however since there are many "Tyrants" they change their name into Jag Panzer and the this release came out later as the Tyrant EP. They played a song from it, the "Battlezones". Luckily no Dissident Alliance track was played, showing by this way that don't have much estimate to this album. The audience was vivid enough, singing the melodies of the most known songs, something that seemed to gladden the band. They finished the normal set with "The Crucifix" (I think so).

After a small break they came back for a dynamic encore, at the end of which Rikard and Chris slammed. I had the luck to grip the former, while my friend Thanos the latter (ouch!).

Jag returned for a second encore, this time to play again the Battlezones, because they had messed up a bit its finishing the first time. Jag have being played for 1h 50 min.

Personally I rank them among the few bands of the "Healthy American Power Metal" of the 80ties as Agent Steel, Heir Apparent, Savage Grace and others. I don't know why they paused for 12 years and come back at the late 90ties. Usually the reunited bands don’t perform as good as at their primes, but Jag is a brilliant exception, proving that have an essential reason of existence. Their live performance was absolute by having a contact and interaction with the audience. It is a 100% worth seeing live group. We hope to see them again to gift magnificent moments as tonight.

The audience seemed to be satisfied, however Gagarin Club was crowded but not full. Approximate Playlist (without order): Battlezones, Licensed to Kill, Warfare, Symphony of Terror, Generally Hostile, The Crucifix, Black, Tyranny, Shadow Thief, Iron Eagle, Viper, Chain Of Command, The Moors, King at a Price, Fate's Triumph, Take to the Sky, Frozen in Fear, The Silent.

After the end of the concert they went to Texas Club for a drink, and there my friend Thanos had a small conversation with the band. All of them were friendly and with the frequenters of the club. Harry was the chief entertainer holding a bottle of whisky and was standing treat all the people. Mark was a bit shy. The general impression is that they liked very much the Greek audience, they did not seem to mind for not having being the concert sold out (in America they are used to play in front of smaller audience) and they will try to come again.

Many thanx to my friend Thanos for the "interview" and his accurate remarks, Evi and Manolis, all of from the Chemical Engineering Dept.
