KATATONIA LIVE REVIEW

KATATONIA LIVE

Athens, An Club Sunday 26 / 10 / 2003

by Panayiotis Papandreopoulos

"An" is a very nice and cozy but also very small club especially for bands like Katatonia. It is unnecessary to say that the concert was sold out and the club was absolutely packed, even at the stairs. I assume the other bigger clubs were occupied that day.

The concert begun with the Greek Snowblind, who played for about 45min. a very sympathetic Sentenced-style track list. They also covered Iron Maiden's "Wrathchild".

After a small break Katatonia appeared in order to tune their instruments and for a final sound check in a general approbation and cheers from the audience. They begun with the "Ghost of the sun" followed by another song from the same album "Criminals".

The crowd was furious and expressed its enthusiasm by headbanging, crowd surfing and even slums, even if the Katatonia (especially lately) is more intellectual, low profile and not indicative of a typical exciting band. The enthusiasm was enhanced by the luck of space, where the stage was literally among and surrounded by the crowd. The stage was too small for a 5-member band and they couldn't move much further than themselves! However this is rather beneficial for a better interaction with the audience especially when the band is in shape.

The hit "Teargas" made almost all the club to sing with Jonas. Then followed some songs from "Tonight's Decision", "Discouraged Ones" and " Last Fair Deal Gone Down" such as "I am nothing", "Cold way", "Tonight's music", "The future of speech", "Dispossesion" "Deadhouse" etc, but the main set was based on "Viva Emptiness" album with songs like "Walking by a wire", "Evidence", "Complicity", etc. The band seems to enjoy the audience response. Jonas told that it was the best audience ever played to. (I don't know to what extend he meant this, but allow us to be a bit reserved because usually the bands say the same things all over the world).

The concert ended with the dynamite from the early days "Murder". Despite their depressive style, Katatonia played that night very vivid and the show lasted at about 90-100 min.

Personally I believe it is not a band that one could listened every hour and I belong to those who don't like their low profile turn, which is sometimes tiresome. However they have their own "personality". The final result seems to have many influences like Pink Floyd, Anathema, Tool and I like the independent, garage style guitars who were sufficiently enough heard that night. Once again the kings of the Swedish melancholy proved their fame.

PS: Many Thanx to Ismini from Sound & Vision.
