KORPIKLAANI LIVE REPORTCologne, Germany @ the Underground, Thursday 06 / 04 / 2006by Juliane John
![]() Do you sometimes feel like you live in the wrong place? Are you stressed by work, school or by life in general? Is there a need inside you to go out into the woods and be one with nature? If any of these things can be applied to you then I strongly recommend you to go to a Korpiklaani concert. It is the best way to forget about your everyday problems. You will see that you’re immediately trapped in the music. At first it will only be your foot or little finger that moves along with the rhythm of the music but before you notice you’ll find yourself dancing around having the best time of your life. You don’t believe me? Well, there are only two options then. Take my advice or simply don’t. But those who have been to a Korpiklaani concert know what I am talking about and will surely agree with me.
But let’s start from the beginning. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you much about the support act “Dark Act” as I arrived kind of late due to the interview I did with the band before the show. What I noticed though was that the band consisted of only two people, a drummer and a vocalist/guitarist. I can’t say if the bassist was just missing or if there wasn’t one at all. Nevertheless, their sound was kind of interesting (neither good nor bad), a mix of dark and death metal. The show was filled with long drum and guitar solos. I have to say, though, that “Dark Act” just didn’t fit to this evening at all considering the fact that most people were eager to see a folk metal band. Around 9 o’clock, the crowd was finally given what they came for, some fine Finnish folk music. Our trip to the Finnish woods began with “Journey Man”, we soon explored “The Spirit of the Forest”, while Jonne performed a “Spring Dance” that could set “Fields in Flames”. As you can see, the lyrical content was more than obvious. As usual, the antlers were placed on the microphone having been a trademark of the band ever since. Jonne was the centre of attraction for he jumped around the stage and radiated pure joy. I’ve seldom seen someone who has that much fun on stage. Nonetheless, this can be said about the whole band. It is probably needless to say that the crowd was having a blast. As I already suggested, everyone was dancing around or banging his/her head. The highlight of the show was of course “Beer Beer”. Note: if you have a camera with you, make sure to put it away during this song because Jonne likes to shower the fans with beer!
