ROOT - Czech black metal
by Sherrie Zemla
Big Boss/Jiri Valter recorded three demos as the drummer! Their dark sound art sounds completely original and you clearly hear their Slavic roots. 1988 to 2003. If you're a fan of non-bastardized black metal and haven't heard Root, the power of Root compels thee! If you are indeed unaware, then it is my pleasure to inform you that Root is a black metal band hailing from the Czech Republic. The name "Root" wether intended or not is very fitting, as in my mind the overall character of this band could be compared to the likes of the root of an old mighty oak tree; twisted, strong and underground. Being a black metal band you might expect a flurry of distortion and raspy vocals from Root, but rather you're pulled into a world of murky slavic melodies and ominous groove. They have a solid bass and drum sound that isn't often found in many of todays "black metal" bands. I wouldn't describe Roots musical compositions as super technical, but most definitely a fitting dark art that lays the foundation for the often overlooked originality, and power of the strikingly unique vocals of frontman Big Boss/Jiri Valter. I personally only own the albums "Kergaras" and "The Book". I didn't choose one particular album for review simply because I know each album in their extensive discography is a hybrid all of it's own and despite this fact, Root should be approached as a whole to reap the many facets of their style. With the possibility of sounding contradictory to my last statement I must say that I have been long wanting to hear more of what Root has under there belt. Being active in the underground since 1988 Root has, to my knowledge, five demos and seven (maybe eight) albums of stygian nature. If you have an unsatisfied appetite for something different, or simply looking for some obscure elegance in the form of "black metal", check these guys out now.
