Kari Kainulainen and Ronnie Backlund made acquaintances in Stockholm in the spring of 2000. They were both anxious to start a musical project together since they hadn't played in bands for some time and were hungry for music. At first there weren't any specific goals in mind, but as the songs they wrote turned out really well they decided to look for members to found a band.
Micke Andersson, who plays the bass, put out an ad that caught their eye:
Bassplayer seeks band. Black clothes, black basses, distortion pedals. Sings like Lemmy Jr. Plays like Lemmy Sr.
They answered it and when meeting up with this bearded man, Kari and Micke soon realized that they'd played together in the same cover-band some ten years ago in their hometown. He was hired right away.
Karis vision was to have a female vocalist so they answered Johanna De Pierre's ad, even though she was not looking for a band that played this type of music. She came and tried out and it worked more than well so they decided on her without consulting with Micke.
Then the tiring search for a drummer began. Some 12-13 drummers were tried but denied for various reasons during the summer and the autumn of 2000. In the fall the band, convinced that a drummer soon would turn up, decided to record a demo to have some material to claim for. Promo-2001 was recorded on Kari's computer with a drum-machine. It received great reviews in metal-magazines and e-zines, including a 7.5 in Terrorizer and being granted the 5th place in "Demos of the year" in Close-Up.
The official band-name Amaran was taken in January 2001.
In February Amaran finally found the drummer they'd been looking for. Robin Bergh, who hadn't played the drums for two years, was the right one for Amaran and became the member that completed the lineup. Amaran started sending out their promo to labels while searching for gigs to play. Unfortunately they were to late to play at any summer-festivals so the first gig took a while to happen. It came to be together with The Storyteller and Dark Eden at a youth recreation center in Stockholm. Later on they also opened up for Entombed (who Ronnie does the live-sound for) at Club-Rockers in Västerås.
In Nov. 2001 Amaran signed a record-deal with Listenable Records. They recorded their debut-album in Feb.-02 in Aabenraa, Denmark, with sound-engineer Jacob Hansen and were very satisfied with the outcome. The album "A world depraved" contains 10 tracks and is set to be released in early May.
In late December 2005 the band decided to split up, having no luck finding a suitable replacement for the departed Johanna De Pierre.
