Angel Witch was one of the first bands of the NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal). They
were formed in 1979 by Kevin Heybourne (guitars), Kevin Riddles (bass) and Dave Dufort (drums).
Soon after the release of "Loser" they split up at the end of 1981 with Heybourne joining
Deep Machine and "Skids" and Dufort forming the dark pop band Tytan. In 1982 Heybourne
wanted to reform Angel Witch and together with Roger Marsden and Ricky Bruce from Deep Machine
he did so together with Jerry Cunningham. Roger Marsden's voice didn't fit the Angel Witch
sound and therefore he was fired. They made very few recordings together and the only
official released was the '82 revisited album.
Later in 1982 the band split up again with
Heybourne and Lou Taylor forming a soft rock band called Blind Fury. In 1984 it was time for
another reformation of Angel Witch. The two albums released were a departure from the old
Angel Witch sound and Heybourne later said that it was a mistake to release them. In 1987
the band appeare on the Dynamo festival in Holland with a heavier sound. In 1989 they went
on tour through California with Laaz Rockit. Heybourne now thought of moving Angel Witch
to USA but the rest of the band didn't like that idea so he crossed the Atlantic on his
ownr to form another Angel Witch with a completely new lineup. Angel Witch later on
switched management but on the day before their first American gig Heybourne was arrested
and deported since he didn't have a work permit with the result of the band splitting up
again.
In the spring and summer of 2000 there were many gigs planned but conflicts within the
band led to a completely new line-up in the summer of 2000. In August the new lineup
played the Wacken Open Air in Germany. The newly formed Angel Witch is supposedly working
on material for a new studio album sounding more like their old days.
In early January 2002 Kevin Heybourne decided to go to the USA for two months without letting the rest of the
band know about it until one week prior to his departure. This resulted in the band breaking up once again.
In late August 2002 it was confirmed that the band had once again re-united... The band then broke up again (surprise surprise...) but reformed in early 2003 with a new line-up.
