The Apparatus was formed in 1999, by Øystein Iversen (gutars) and Per Spjøtvold (synth), shortly thereafter Ketil Sæther (guitar) and Kim Sætre (drums) joined the band. After auditioning several bassists and vocalists, the bands initial line-up was soon completed by Sondre Øien (bass) and former vocalist Lars Klingenberg.
As of today, The Apparatus consists of 6 members, these being:
Øystein Iversen (lead & rhythm guitars)
Ketil Sæther (lead & rhythm guitars)
Sondre Øien (bass)
Kim Sætre (drums, vdrums)
Per Spjøtvold (synths and samples)
Vegard Harkjerr (vocals)
In other words, the line-up has not changed dramatically since the band’s conception, other than the vocal duties.
In the early years, the band’s main influences were primarily death- and black metal oriented bands, such as Thorns, Anathema and My Dying Bride, and on the first demo “We crawl to nothing”, recorded during fall 2000 at the band’s rehearsal place, the music was mid-paced, melodic death metal, with similar features to the aforementioned bands.
Since the “We crawl to nothing” sessions, almost every trace of black metal has vanished from the music. The death metal influences are still present, but unlike American or Polish counterparts, The Apparatus does not consider buzzsaw guitars or blast-beat drum patterns as necessary elements. Rather than ’commiting’ themselves to a certain style, the band has drawn inspiration and incorporated elements from many different kinds of music, thus slowly developing the band’s sound to a very individual style of (death) metal. The music now has a more melodic approach as well as getting more and more ’progressive-sounding’, which shows on the second recording, “Lost : Crossed”.
“Lost : Crossed” was recorded in early 2002 in three days at Skansen Lydstudio in Trondheim. The band entered the studio again towards the end of 2002, to re-record the vocals for the track “The Revelation”, with recently added vocalist Vegard Harkjerr, who replaced L.Klingenberg in-between these two recording sessions.
“Lost : Crossed” represents the direction the band has been going in the last two years or so, and besides the ’progressive’ aspects of the music, there are also references to other genres, such as trash- or epic metal, though such elements are limited. Also, the general feeling in the music is more rock’n roll than before – more groovy, so to speak.
The members of The Apparatus have now collectively decided that the band is ready for ’the next step’; sometime during july this summer, the band will once again hit the studio, this time with the intention of recording a full-length; our debut album. As the band stands without financial support, this recording will be self-financed. For the release of this record, we would like to get in contact with a serious record label, to spread the record to the masses. We are also interested in achieving contact with zines, distros etc.
All the material for this recording is ready, it will have a playing time of approximately an hour – the recording will have about 9 – 10 songs, our remaining material will either be saved for future recordings or used exclusively as live numbers.
As far as playing live goes, the band has attended a few local festivals, as well has held a few one-off gigs in various parts of Norway; The track “Thanathos” off the “Lost : Crossed” promo was recorded live, may 17th in Røros, at which time The Apparatus was the support-act for [the true] Mayhem. In the near future, The Apparatus have also decided that they want to see the world from outside of our rehearsal place more often – in other words, playing more live shows! At the time of writing, a number of live performances are planned at venues in both Norway and Sweden, although no live dates are set as of yet.
In August 2004 the band signed a record contract with the British label Dream Catcher Records.
