Arrival started as one-man project in 1999 by “Sin.K” who also recorded the very first promotional tape later on the same year. The songs were simple and sound was quite harsh, but on the other hand they were epic and extremely majestic. The main point was just to record few ideas and the songs were not to be released in any form, just few copies were given away. Still many people got interested about the project and back then Arrival was just a project. Few small labels were interested but at the end KTOK´s deal to release the material in a form of 7"ep was accepted. Nothing happened for a long time and at the end KTOK records decided to stop all contact for a reason that is still unclear and made a certain note of their professionalism.
In meanwhile Arrival had grown to a real band with new members on guitars and drums. “Icrs2K” and “Wraith” took the strings and “Isv. Kran” the fire control of battery. Few songs were made during the late autumn of 1999 but shortly “Wraith” was replaced with another fine guitarist Teemu Lehikoinen. This was the first solid line-up that was able to rehearse as well as produce material worth to record and listen.
On the last days of Millennium the first official recording was done. Promo was named to “Icon of Worthless” and it consisted of two songs, “Icon of Worthless” and “Thou borne all sins”. Timing was crucial since half of the members were forced to join the army and again lots of time was lost. However, during this time band searched a deal with the promo and it was sent to numerous labels and magazines. Generally the reviews and feedback were more than expected but only a handful of labels were ready to take a risk with quite unknown and new band. Edgerunner records showed their interest and the signed deal was acceptable. Arrival signed to EdgeRunner Records Intl. for two full-length albums.
Like out of nowhere, a small yet dedicated Finnish label “Breath of Pestilence” became interested of releasing the very first songs that KTOK once failed to release. Even if the 7” was out after the debut album it can be considered of being the first release Arrival made. “Son of Stormbringer” was finally out after years and right from the start the object was clear; to release a very limited press of vinyls that only those worth of it could possess. Just one hundred copies were made with a promise of no re-press.
Year after the debut was recorded. Teemu Lehikoinen had been replaced with “Inzomniac” that joined to strengthen the frontline. Again, the timing was perfect since “Inzomniac” gave that extra spice on songs just before the album was recorded. He also joined on songwriting from the start and brought a fresh vision and new force on the band.
Time in studio was hard because of very low and precise budget. Many compromises had to be done in order to produce material worth to listen and at the same time keeping in mind the deadline. Sessions took place on Mediaworks studios with Jone Väänänen, a mastermind behind the recording table. Album was basically recorded in short time but finished and mixed during the whole summer. The result “An Abstract of Inertia” exceeded all expectations and gave a strong place for band to stand a look for future.
