The concept of Bal-Sagoth was beginning to take form in the mind of Byron already in 1989. The name was taken from a
book title from 1931 by one of Byron´s favorite authors. In July 1993 Byron met the brothers Jonny and Christopher Maudling who
were looking for a band to write original music in. Bal-Sagoth was now formed. In Setember same year Vincent Crabtree joined
them to play keyboards and Jason Porter had also come to join the three. In December they recorded their first and only demo
tape which resulted in Frater Nihil from Cacophonous Records offering the band a three album deal which they accepted.
In June 1994 Bal-Sagoth entered the Academy Studios in West Yorkshire, England, to record their debut album "A Black Moon Broods
Over Lemuria". Due to administrative problems at Cacophonous the release of the album was delayed for almost a year. Vincent Crabtree
now left the band to be replaced by Leon Forrest. In December 1995 Bal-Sagoth was supposed to have played two shows in London and
Bradford to support Cradle Of Filth but since Byron had been injured at a Cannibal Corpse gig they were cancelled. Byron was
soon well again and in April 1995 they played their first ever live show at a metal festival at Dublin Castle, London. In May
1995 the debut album was finally released and became a bestseller in the metal community.
In the latter half of 1995 the band did several shows and in October they disappeared from the world to begin the writing of their
second album. In the summer of 1996 they again entered Academy Studios to record "Starfire Burning Upon The Ice-Veiled Throne
Of Ultima Thule". In November 1996 they were headlining the Ragnarök festival in Belgium and at the same time their second
album was released, again with a great response from media and fans. In December 1996 the band suffered another line-up change when
bassist Jason Porter was replaced by Alistair Maclatchy whom the band had been working with before. In February 1997 Bal-Sagoth
went on their first European tour together with Dark Funeral (Sweden) and Ancient (Norway).
In the summer of 1997 they played a few shows in London and Belgium and in August 1997 the band was given a sponsorship deal
with Battle Orders Ltd, a replica arms and armor supplier from Sussex. In October 1997 Bal-Sagoth went on their second European tour
with the Norwegian bands Emperor and Nocturnal Breed. Once back in England again they started the recording of their third album
"Battle Magic", again in Academy Studios. In January 1998 Leon Forrest left the band for a career in law enforcement. Jonny now left
the drum kit and started playing the keyboards instead. In March their third album was released and their deal with Cacophonous was
completed.
In May 1998 they found a new drummer in Dave Mackintosh. In July Alistair Maclatchy left the band and was replaced by an old
bandmate of Mackintosh namely Mark Greenwell. In the winter of 98/99 the band started working on their next album and in March
1999 they signed a new three-album deal with the major German metal label Nuclear Blast. In April-June 1999 they recorded their
fourth opus "The Power Cosmic" which was released in October with huge success. In the year 2000 the band were again busy writing new
material and preparing for their first live shows since 1997. On the 16th of April 2001 their new album "Atlantis Ascendant" was finally released.
