The Beastie Boys have been generally referred to as one of the first bands to mix punk, reggae, jazz, and funk into two then-new genres called "rap" and "hip-hop". They remain a dominant influence in the genre they helped create. The band formed in 1981 in New York by MCA (Adam Yauch) on bass, Kate Schellenbach on drums, John Berry on guitar, and Mike D (Michael Diamond) on vocals and this line-up had released a number of self-released EPs. It would not be until sometime later that John Berry was replaced by Adrock (Adam Horovitz) just before signing a deal with Rick Rubin's Def Jam Records for their 1986 debut release Licensed to Ill, which is often considered a landmark hip-hop album. Later on, Capitol Records signed the Beastie Boys for the rest of their albums and the band has been (very) successful ever since.
