Blackstar Rising was originally formed in 1997 by the current members of Carcass minus Bill Steer along with former Cathedral guitarist Mark Griffiths. The band was more or less a continuation of latter-day Carcass but they felt a need to adopt a new name as their music was now far from the grindcore origins of Carcass and instead closer linked to classic 70s hard rock / heavy metal. Eventually they changed their name to Blackstar Rising after having discovered another band with the same name. Drummer Ken Owen fell victim to a brain tumor during recordings for a second album, and with him unable to continue, the band folded. Owen has since been reported as getting better.
