Burzum is the solo project of Varg (originally named Christian) Vikernes and started back in 1987, at the age of 14, under the name Urak-hai. He took a one-year break from mid-1990 to mid-1991 when he played in two other bands called Satanel and Old Funeral. Then he continued with Uruk-hai and changed the name to Burzum as Satanel split up. He quickly gained himself a name in the extreme metal underground and became even more famous when he was convicted of murdering Mayhem's Euronymous in 1994. Since then the band is no more but Burzum has become a cult band within the black metal scene. Varg also wrote some lyrics for the Darkthrone albums "Transylvanian Hunger" and "Panzerfaust".
About the early days:Uruk-Hai was a project that later became Buzum. It was
the first band of both Varg Vikernes and Fenriz of Darkthrone.
Fenriz and Varg met at a new years ever party when they were about 14.
Fenriz placed a loaded .357 Magnum to Varg's forhead and accused him of
calling him a 'Fatso'. A year or 2 later in about 1988 they formed
Kalashnikov with a bassist who's name no one remembers. Because almost all
the songs were about Lord of the Rings they changed the name of the
band to Uruk-Hai (The name of Sauron's elite high orcs in lord of the
rings, Grishnackh also is the name of one of these Uruk-Hai and even Burzum
is taken from lotr, meaning darkness in the black speach of mordor.)
In 1989 when he was about 17 Varg left uruk-hai for a band with more
'serious musicians' called Old Funeral wich featured Abbath and Demonaz
of Immoral.
He later left Old Funeral because we was unhappy with their death metal
direction. And decided to reform Uruk-Hai by himself calling it Burzum.
Parts of Uruk-Hai materal were later used for Burzum albums.
The only materal left from Uruk-Hai are 6 tracks released in a
complation of early Burzum demos called 'Blast from the ancient past'
