The American heavy / speed metal band Damien Thorne came to life in Chicago, Illinois, in 1983. The remaining founding member, guitarist Ken Mandat created the act together with frontman Justin Fate who he had seen performing for another local band called Septre. They hooked up with drummer Brian Horak and, after a phone call from Zoetrope / Trouble drummer Barry Stern (R.I.P.), bassist Sanders Pate. Soon guitarist George Shelton also joined the fold.
A band name was left to be decided on. Not unlike other metal fans the band members were avid horror film enthusiasts and the main character of "The Omen" was given the honor to baptize the new promise from the Chicago streets. The metal scene in Chicago was vibrant at this time with bands like Trouble, Master and Zoetrope terrorizing the local stages. Damien Thorne sold out almost every show right from the very start. In order not to bore people they decided to play their home town once every three or four months.
Two early demos were recorded, one bearing the title "Killing Force" (comprised of the songs "Killing Force", "The Warning" and "Damien's Procession"), and the second being an eponymous one which sold many copies worldwide. The demos were also received very well by the metal journalists, garnering positive reviews in many important metal magazines such as Kerrang and Metal Forces.
One night former Virgin Steele guitarist Jack Starr could be found in the audience when Damien Thorne performed. He offered himself to give the band's second demo to Cobra Records (a label working with Roadrunner Records in Europe) who immediately after hearing it offered the band a record contract. They released one album for the label, produced by David DeFeis of Virgin Steele, but they suffered from financial problems and went under while the band were busy recording a sophomore effort.
Not really knowing what the next move was to be the band relocated to Los Angeles, California, in order to secure a new deal but it was a rough time for metal. Alternative music was on the rise and lacking a suitable label partner the band temporarily broke up, some members moving back to Chicago, others settling in LA. Damien Thorne never received proper funding for a European tour but they did headline a US tour in support of their debut album.
After having broken up, guitarist Ken Mandat played with a hardcore band called Bug for a little while and recorded a four song demo with them but he always continued to write Damien Thorne material for a future reunion. Guitarist Michael Monroe sadly passed away in a tragic motorcycle accident in 1993 but Ken did not surrender but resurrected the band, recruiting several new musicians. A new full-length album is being recorded for a May 2005 release on the German label Iron Glory Records.
