Dealing in exactly the type of eerie monolithic doom that you would expect from a band emanating from darkest Dorset, England, Justin Oborn (vocals/guitar), Tim Bagshaw (bass) and Mark Greening (drums) first got together in 1993 after Oborn left his previous band Eternal. Drawn together by a mutual love of Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus and marijuana, the band would get stoned and crank out ponderous riffs until they had recognisable songs, the first examples being released as "Demon Lung" a split single with Our Haunted Kingdom (an early incarnation of Orange Goblin). An expectedly heavy affair, the self-titled debut emerged soon after and included some ragged Blue Cheer moments among the ultra slow, dirge-like riffing. Despite a noticeable disinterest in playing live gigs in support, the trio nonetheless developed a rare momentum and Come My Fanatics " followed a year later. Still preposterously heavy, the release also contained a more pronounced Hawkwind-style space-rock influence. A further split EP Chrono.naut (with Orange Goblin) extended the theme almost expanding into the krautrock territory of Can and Amon Düül. The Supercoven EP was a return to bowel-quaking riffs with two torturously drawn out arrangements, complete with suitably twisted cover art by Oborn.
A series of mishaps then halted the band's progress. Oborn removed the tip of a finger in a "flooring accident' and suffered a collapsed eardrum during a 1999 support slot with Goatsnake " the band's famed wall of prehistoric amps taking its toll. Using all the negative experiences generated since the last album as motivation for their next work, Dopethrone was a demonstration of sheer power, ultra slow and intensely heavy. Each track was preceded by a clip from a classic underground horror flicks (Oborn's other love). Generating good reviews in the press the band reluctantly set out on the road in support. Predictably, things did not progress well. Problems began a mere four dates into their US tour with Warhorse, when they faced a grilling from the police department of Richmond, Virginia over alleged "suspicious behaviour". Further dates were also not without incident as relations within the band became increasingly strained and performances increasingly chaotic.
