The Kenttäkumpu brothers, Marko and Thomas, formed Evocation
in the fall of '91. We started rehearsing and did a couple of gigs. In
February '92 we did our first recording in Sunlight Studios (Stockholm)
with the demon-producer Tomas Skogsberg behind the wheels. It resulted
in a 3-track + intro demo limited to 500 copies named "The Ancient
Gate." The fact that it was recorded in just 16 hours made the sound very
raw and brutal. The name, "Ancient Gate," refers to one of the gates to
other dimensions, as described in the most evil of all books,
"Necronomicon" written by the "Mad Arab" Abdul Alhazred. Vesa and Marko made all
music and lyrics for this demo. Vesa also plays bass on this recording.
Six months later in September '92 we recorded 4 tracks at GMP Studios
(Borås). This material is a bit faster and more complicated in its
structure compared to the earlier material. The recording became a promo-cd,
including the earlier demo. The song writing process within the band
had changed since the first demo and now more or less involved all the
members. Just previous to this, we also had recruited bass player
Christian Saarinen from the goth metal band Cemetary (Black Mark/Century
Media). After the recording we did a couple of more gigs including a big
event in Gothenburg, which featured Dismember as the headliner.
In the autumn of '93 Evocation was put on ice for several years despite
the fact that several labels were interested in signing us. The main
reason for putting Evocation on ice was differences within the band of
what musical direction to take. Today we agree that Evocation is nothing
but pure death metal and shall so remain.
Three years ago, in 2001, we decided to see if there was still any
label interested in releasing our previously recorded material. Breath Of
Night contacted us and now the self-titled debut album is being released
by them and distributed by Merciless Records.
Since our recordings in '92, we have not produced any new material and
we consider Evocation to be a side project. Our plan, though, is to
record some new material and perhaps some covers of favorite tunes that
have influenced us along the way.
After the end of '93, Thomas has been working with Cemetary/Sundown
(Black Mark/Century Media) for a couple of years. Janne has done some
hammering [i.e., drumming] in different bands. Vesa has worked a bit with
Sundown (Century Media) and Stoneflow. He has also been busy the last
couple of years working in studios. Marko has done some work with the
Finnish hardcore act Rajoitus (Hardcore Holocaust). Christian has worked
with Lake of Tears (Black Mark) for several years.
