Excalion was born in December 2000, when keyboarder
Jarmo "Jappe" Myllyvirta began to look for a group to
play a couple of songs that laid in his hard drive. In that
purpose drummer Henri Pirkkalainen, bassist Timo Sahlberg
and guitarist Tero Vaaja gathered in the tiny rehearsal room
of a multipurpose building in Konnevesi. In this first rehearsal,
everybody was having a good time, if nothing else, so the
first impressions of the wannabe band at hand were
positive.
After this enthusiastic start the guitarist joined the
army in January 2001, which meant that rehearsals with
full line-up became more rare. It was also obvious that the band,
which had been named Excalion, needed a singer. The solution
was found in our circle of friends; Jarmo Pääkkönen, an easy-going
guy known for his enormous lung capacity, was invited to the
rehearsals. His former band Slave Of Wisdom being recently
split up, Jarmo joined the band as a vocalist.
Excalion played its first gig in May 2001 at Työväentalo
in Konnevesi. The setlist was put together and included several
own songs that were written during spring and covers, mostly
Stratovarius. In the musical sense, the performance was far
from good, but the audience seemed to like us, as well as
some professional musicians among the spectators.
At this time we noticed that if we wanted to make
music with more variety and personality, the band would need
another guitarist. So one day Kimmo Hänninen, former
Slave Of Wisdom-guitarist, arrived at the rehearsals, and took
his place as a part of Excalion in about ten minutes. With
him we got, not only a pleasant buddy, but also tons of
musical and technical knowledge.
During summer Jappe wrote new songs, and in July
we played a gig in Häyrylänranta Blues, a cozy little summer
festival (where Kimmo played with a bandaged foot after being
hit by a car earlier the same day. Not bad). In July also
Tero´s time in the army came to end, but only a couple of days
later it was Jappe´s turn to start carrying land mines around
the forests of Middle Finland. Our problems with regular rehearsals
didn´t ease up.
In September it was time to record our first real demo.
This was done in Studio Kaktus, not too far from Jyväskylä,
with Jussi Niemi (Thanx man). Three songs - Forlorn, Heart & Home,
Sinner´s Symphony - were recorded and mixed swiftly in two days.
Largely content with the outcome, we continued to work on
some new songs to finally eliminate the Stratovarius covers
from our setlist.
Starting from January 2002, we will have a precious
half-year period when no band members will be in the army.
That is surely going to be active time for Excalion; more gigs,
more new songs, hopefully continuous musical progress...
