In the fall of 1998 the Greek guitarist Gus G. attended the Berklee college in Boston, USA but he dropped out of school after two weeks of studies to record a demo cd with some friends. He name the project Firewind and shortly started looking for a record deal. His demo recordings attracted David T. Chastain, the owner of Leviathan Records who offered him a contract in 2001 after he had been working hard on new material. Chastain also helped him find the right band members and hooked him up with vocalist Stephen Fredrick and drummer Brian Harris, both formerly with Kenziner. Gus G. knew a bass player named Konstantine who also joined the band. He had been playing with different bands in Greece for many years, the most notable being the legendary underground act Medieval Death. At that time he also fronted a band called IT who played something sounding like a mix of Rammstein and Static X.
On May 3rd, 2003, it was officially announced at the band's website that they had been joined by the Norwegian drummer Stian L. Kristoffersen (Pagan's Mind) and bass player Petros Christo (ex-Breaking Silence) from Gus's own hometown Thessaloniki replacing Harris and Konstantine. In late October the band signed a new worldwide deal with Century Media.
