Gwar was formed in the city of Richmond, Virginia, in the late 80s by Dave Brockie who at that time was playing in a punk band called Death Piggy which slowly evolved into Gwar as they started experimenting with various costumes on stage and their stage show became more and more advanced throughout the years. The original members were dropouts from the sculpture department at Virginia's Common Wealth University, an established art college. As Gwar they went on to release a long row of albums, sold hundreds of thousands of records and have so far been nominated for 2 Grammy awards. In June 2004 they signed a new record deal with DRT Entertainment, the independent label founded in 2003 by senior music industry executives Derek Shulman, Ron Urban and Ted Green.
