The British gothic metal band Hand was formed in Horsham, Sussex, in 2004 by the duo of Kat Ward (bass, vocals, piano) and Kieren Johnstone (guitars) who set out combining elements of rock and trance. After a debut demo they became a trio once drummer Cris Nelson entered in January 2006 and another demo was recorded entitled "Shadow: Word Pain", featuring Fony guitarist Chris Hamilton.

In early 2008 a deal was signed with Copro Records / Casket Music who released the band's debut album "Deadroom Journal" in September. Despite many positive reviews the band parted ways with their new-found label and in December 2008 they accepted an offer from the upcoming label Femme Metal Records.
