Idiot was formed in 2002, when Jim Sundström and his friend
Andreas Johansson-Barquero played around with Jim's home studio
equipment. They improvised and recorded a song which was entitled "Idiot", and
thus the band of the same name was born. The first five songs were
recorded the same way, completely improvised and written and recorded
within an hour. The songs they recorded were released on a self-titled demo
in the summer of 2002 on Idiot's own label; Fyllan Records. Shortly
thereafter, Andreas moved and decided to pursue other musical interests,
mainly as vocalist in the band Fat Taisir (http://www.fat-taisir.com).
Jim then called in another friend to help out with the songwriting;
Andreas Eriksson. The two had already worked together a long time and done
over a dozen songs under the name "Unspeakable". They now continued to
produce new material for Idiot, which still was a studio-only project.
Jim and Andreas were the only permanent members, but called in a wide
variety of friends to do guest appearances on the new songs.
The second demo "Känsla och stil" (Feeling and Style) was released in
early 2004. For this occasion, Jim summoned a group of people to bring
Idiot out on stage for the first time. The live band consists of Jim on
vocals and guitar, Viktor Eriksson on bass, Joakim Jacobsson on guitar
and David Wikberg on drums. Andreas, who lives too far away to be able
to rehearse regularly with the others was left out of the live act but
remains a permanent member of the band.
Musically, Idiot is influenced from all sorts of directions: heavy
metal, rock, punk, black metal and much more is mixed together. The lyrics
are in Swedish and take a homourous look at everyday subjects. The
band's motto is to see the big things in the small things of life and bring
them to the spotlight.
Part of the Idiot concept is also to see no limitations and to be
overambitious and spend more time and effort on the project than what most
people would find sane. But then again, the band name was chosen for a
reason and everyone involved proudly proclaims what was stated in the
lyrics of the very first song: "I am an Idiot and proud of it!"
