We started in Stockholm back in fall '92, only our name then was "Tears of Luna". The ones who started out was me, Joakim B, André, and Guillaume. Then (and probably still) the influences were Anathema (who had just released their EP, Crestfallen) and My Dying Bride (As the Flowers Wither). At that time, I think we were more amused of just playing than actually creating good music.
In spring '93 we added Dennis L as a singer to the line-up and the band became more focused. Those early years alot of members came and went. At least we managed to record our first demo 'The Journey' (1994). We actually got ourselves a record deal on that one, however we turned it down. thinking we could go for the BBD, bigger better deal! Instead we recorded our second demo 'Skydancer' (1995). Followed in '96 by 'Time Circles' which was the first release under the name IN GREY.
After that the band was kind of put on ice for a while. I was studying in other parts of the country and Anders decided to concentrate on Katatonia and his other projects. It wasn't until 98-99 things started to get going again. Dennis S replaced André behind the drums because his lack of interest in the band. With new members and enthusiasm we made the demo 'Seasons Change' (1999).
The millenium as recalled by Dennis:Seasons Change was recorded in "Subsonic studio" early summer of '99, it turned out nicely and got some pretty good reviews. By that time the line-up was; Niklas (lead guitar), Dennis L (vocals), Jocke from-up-north (guitar), and me on drums.
Shortly after we realesed our demo, we got our first gig with me behind the drums, at "Stålverket", a swedish festival out on the countryside. As we still had no bass player we borrowed ex-Katatonia member Mikael, which at least for me felt good since he had more experience of live performances than us at that time. The gig went ok, even though Jocke "from-up-north" decided to put new strings on his guitar the day before, which was kind of a bad idea, it tuned out about every 30 sec. Wow the sound was really great... ehh well.
Winter and snow came and Jocke got homesick, so he quit the band and moved back home to the igloos in northern sweden again. Shortly after Johan joined us as a bass player. Now when we'd lost a guitar guy and got us a new bass guy we decided it was time for another demo, so we called up Stefan the owner of "Subsonic studio" and booked us in.
Oh yeah !!! The demo "Mask" had been created (summer of 2000). And when the record companies, webzines and magazines got a hold of this one, the comments and reviews were quite varied. Some more or less hated it because of the more upbeat hitsingle sound to it. Others loved it just because of the upbeat hitsingle sound mixed with our clean and heavylike goth-sound. I think it was kind of cool that it stirred up such different feelings. Still no record deal though :(
About six month later (early '01) we got our second gig in Philipstad, also a little town in the countryside. That gig whent really well altough we'd cracked a couple of beercases before entering the stage. With us on that gig we had Fredrik, a new guitar guy. God damn!! Did he have the right touch for our music or what? And besides he was a real funny goof as well. It was unfortunate for us he had to quit the band that same spring to spend more time with his family and work.
So now we were down to the four of us again. After a couple of months of just being low we decided to pull ourselves together and started to write new material. This resulted in a couple of new songs and when time came to record, we figured it was time to try another studio.
So in summer of '01 we entered "Dug out production" a studio owned by Daniel Bergstrand. The result of our labour was a 2 song demo "Above" which had a whole new touch to it, (Bergstrand sure knows his stuff). Very shortly after the recording was done, the bassplayer Johan suddenly decided to quit. Well that didn't stop us from making perhaps the best marketing of In Grey and the new demo.
The reviews were pouring in and crashed my computer... hahaha no... but we did get alot more than we were used to, and at least two recordcompanies were interested, even though it never resulted in anything. And as I recall we got one or two more labels interested as late as one year after Above was released without doing nothing. None of it worked out though.
Spring 2002 we found ourselves a new guitarist, Mattias and the search for a bassplayer to complete the line-up continued...
Last couple of years until present as told by Per:I joined the band in May 2002, it was Dennis Starkenberg who called me up and wondered if I was interested to play bass with In Grey. Since my other band didn’t rehearse as much as before I thought it could be a good thing to keep up with my bass playing so I accepted to try out for them.
It wasn’t much movement in the band during the summer and when things started to roll again in the autumn our second guitarist Mattias decided to leave the band. This gave me a great opportunity to present my old friend Daniel C to the band (we had been playing together a couple of years earlier in the death metal band Flagellation). With Daniel, me and Dennis we started to rehearse more intensely than before and soon we presented our first co-written song Sulphur tears.
The beginning of spring 2003 marked a new era of the band, as we participated in the Emergenza music contest. Even though the band had existed since '93 there had been few live performances, but now we started to play live immensely. Later that summer we recorded our debut album Sulphur tears in Dug out and EAR studio, it was the result of all the hard work we had put in the band. The Emergenza contest also gained us a mini tour in Latvia with us as headliners, it was a great experience for us and made us even more certain of what we wish to accomplish.
At the end of the year various circumstances made both guitarist Daniel C and vocalist Dennis L to part with the band. As a result to that we decided to bring in a keyboard player in the band along with a new singer and a guitar player. Starting fresh with our new line-up in the beginning of 2004 we continued to work on new material for our second record.
