The Colombian death metal band Internal Suffering was formed in Pereira in the western region of the country in November 1996 out of the ashes of a previous band called Suffer. The original line-up consisted of frontman Fabián, guitarist Leandro, bassist Andrés and drummer Jorge. During their first year of existence they played many local shows and in March 1997 they were offered the support slot on the Colombian tour of US death metallers Incantation. After this tour Fabián was fired from the band and replaced by Fabio.

In September 1997 Internal Suffering opened up for German thrashers Sodom in the capital city of Medellin where they played in front of 4,500 people, a show arranged by the local death metal label Clinic Records. A couple of months later it was time for yet another line-up change as drummer Jorge was fired due to musical differences. Edwin stepped in as the band's new skinbasher.

In March 1998 the band made an attempt at recording their debut album but the studio lacked experienced metal engineers and professional equipment so the plans were postponed. Meanwhile their newfound drummer Edwin was replaced by Fabio. The following year the band made another attempt at recording an album, this time with a much more satisfactory result. However, Fabio decided to leave the band just a few days after the recordings, leaving room for the return of the previous drummer Edwin. "Supreme Knowledge Domain" was released on September 1st, 2000 by the Spanish label Repulse Records / Qabalah Productions, run by Dave Rotten of Avulsed.

In April 2000 the band returned to the studio in order to record three new songs as well as a brand new improved version of their most successful song "Outside Dwellers", resulting in the "Promo 2000". Many labels were interested in signing the band but the band decided to go with the Japanese Macabre Mementos Records who released their six track mini album called "Unmercyful Extermination" in March 2001. In April Internal Suffering was going to embark on a North American tour alongside death metal colleagues Brodequin and Vomit Remnants, including a stop at the Ohio Death Fest, although the entire trek had to be cancelled due to visa problems.

In September 2001 the band signed a new contract with the Dutch label Displeased Records and they immediately entered the studio to record their sophomore album "Chaotic Matrix" for an April 2002 release date. In February they also completed a national tour supporting American death metal legends Cannibal Corpse, playing in front of audiences averaging 1000 people a night. In April they were finally able to do their previously cancelled tour of North America, including two shows in New York and successful appearances at the Ohio Death Fest, Massachusetts Death Fest and Xtreme Benefest in Detroit. The band now relocated permanently to New York.

In April of 2003 Internal Suffering embarked on a monster tour of Europe, playing around 80 shows in almost every country of the continent. The massive trek also included stops at many metal festivals such as Fuck The Commerce Fest (Germany, Bands Battle Festival (Germany, Steel Warriors Rebellion Festival (Portugal), Obscene Extreme Festival (Czech Republic), Shitfest (Slovakia) and the Kaltenbach Open Air (Austria).

Back from Europe in November 2003 the band once again teamed up with their original drummer Fabio Ramirez who had been spending his time with Carnal and the Spanish band Infernal Hate. Unfortunately the band was forced to take a short break as guitarist Leandro broke his arm. In April 2004 they entered the Mana Studios in Tampa, Florida, to record their third full-length album "Choronzonic Force Domination" together with producer Erik Rutan of Hate Eternal. In August Internal Suffering completed the "Brutal Domination" US tour alongside Incinerate, Stabwound and Emeth.

August 2004 also saw guitarist Leandro being fired from the band due to both personal and musical differences. He was replaced by the talented Japanese guitarist Makoto Mizoguchi. New new line-up once again entered Mana Studios to record what would be the "Promo 2005", leading up to a deal with the Californian death metal label Unique Leader Records. Many more shows took place across North America, including a headlining West Coast trek supported by Emeth, Victimas and End To End.

In January 2006 Internal Suffering once again returned to Mana Studios and recorded their fourth full-length album "Awakening of the Rebel" together with Erik Rutan. Guitarist Makoto left the band because of musical differences and the line-up was once again all-Colombian as the former Pustulated member Andres Usma joined the crew.

In April 2006 the band performed at the Tokyo Deathfest in Japan and in November they embarked on the "Primordial Domination" US tour supporting Incantation alongside Year of Desolation. December marked a return to Colombian ground as they did a national tour alongside fellow death metallers Souledge. March 2007 saw Internal Suffering being nominated for "Best Colombian Metal Band of the Year" by the popular Colombian mainstream magazine SHOCK.

Rumors of a possible break-up were shot down on the band's official website in November 2007 although "soon to be announced line-up changes" were mentioned. Since then nothing has been heard from the band.
