The Los Angeles based all-female band L7 was formed in early 1985 by guitarist / vocalist Donita Sparks and guitarist / vocalist Suzi Gardner. After going through a few bass player they were joined by bassist Jennifer Finch. The name L7 was taken from a Beat Culture slang term meaning "square". In late 1987 they signed a deal with Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz' label Epitaph Records. A self-titled debut album saw the light in September of 1988 and L7 embarked on their first national tour, in support of Bad Religion.

In 1989 L7 signed a new deal with Sub Pop Records and a second US tour followed together with the band Cat Butt. After the release of "Smell The Magic" in July 1990 the band toured Europe for the first time and opened up for Nirvana for several UK dates. Their new album attracted major label interest and in the spring of 1991 a new deal was signed with Slash / Reprise. In April of 1992 L7 delivered their new album "Bricks Are Heavy" which was produced by Butch Vig who also produced Nirvana's classic Nevermind before co-founding the band Garbage.

In the fall of 1991 L7 also founded a non-profit organization called Rock For Choice (RFC) which raises awareness and money for women's reproductive legal rights. After the release of "Bricks Are Heavy" the band toured the world, including dates in Europe, Japan and Australia. New tours and festival appearances followed and in the summer of 1994 they co-headlined the Lollapalooza Tour and Oliver Stone featured their song "Shitlist" in his movie "Natural Born Killers". In 1997 WEA, who owns Reprise and Slash Records and many other labels, dropped L7 with four albums left to go on their original seven album deal.

Over the next couple of years the band members spend some time apart from each other working on other projects but eventually they started writing new material. After having grown tired of waiting for a new deal they formed their own label Wax Tadpole in 1999, a name taken from one of their early songs.
