Lumsk photo
Lumsk are a new and exciting band that has emerged from the musical environment in Trondheim. They combine traditional Norwegian folk music and rock/metal in their own particular style. The result is melodious and bewitching, raw, but by the same token expressive and beautiful. A whole new way of presenting a Norwegian cultural heritage. Lumsk do anything from slow folk tunes to heavy metal songs with melodious string arrangements and elements of folk music. The band´s unique sound and style of music can be explained by the diverse and very different musical backgrounds of the band members. The members are from twenty-one to thirty-five and have a history of musical versatility: folk music, pop, country, prog rock, hard rock and metal. The ensemble of seven play the drums, the bass (and male vocals), synth, the violin and two guitars. The voice of a female singer completes the ensemble.

Right from the onset the band´s unified wish was to put music to an old Norwegian tale. Inspired by the illustrations of Gerhard Munthe Lumsk wanted to do something with the medieval ballad Åsmund Fregdegjævar, an old folk tale from Telemark. This comprehensive text comprises of forty stanzas. The tale has all the recognisable elements of a traditional Norwegian fairy-tale: an abducted princess, bold men, trolls in abundance, and a happy ending with gold and love.

The band has put in a lot of work with text, melody and music to tell the whole tale and at the same time express the various moods that unfold throughout the ballad. The result is twelve songs. Very little of the original text is altered. Lumsk has wanted to convey Åsmund Fregdegjævar without diverting too much from the authentic text. No one has previously set out to tell the tale of Åsmund Fregdegjævar in the extent that is done here.

Lumsk have recently recorded four songs at Skansen Recording studio. They are very pleased with the end product. On the introduction of Ormin Lange, the band drew on the professional skill of the actor Stian Hovland Pedersen at Trøndelag Theatre. Frifond Musikk has helped finance the recording.

Lumsk has recently (Oct 2002) signed a record-deal with SPIKEFARM records, and will enter the studio in November 2002 to record their full-lenght "Åsmund Fregdegjævar".
