Marshall Law were formed in the summer of 1988. First rehearsal took place at Ace Studios [Now defunked] in the depths of Digbeth, Birmingham ... Present at these early sessions were Andy Pyke [Hurt, Detroit, Damien and Viva] on vocals/drums, Dave Martin [Shadow Lands] guitar, Darren Horton guitar [Siam], Alan Kelly drums [Shy], and a bass player called Nigel [Sorry I can't remember his surname [Ark] all in our very early twenties. Not all that long ago? Early songs that we wrote and jammed were ‘Under The Hammer', ‘Nobody's Fool', ‘All For Rock', plus a few covers.
The band recorded an early 4-track recording of ‘Under The Hammer',' Nobody's Fool' and ‘All For Rock' in September 1988, never released!, it was crude and nasty but it got us some shows at Edwards No8 and the rest is history.
However before playing any shows the band needed another guitarist and drummer and bass player enter Mick Donavan [China], Malcolm Gould [Love And War] and Andy Southwell [Ivory]. They were the complete package, auditions were set up over a drunken night out at Edwards No8. Date fixed so we jammed and we soon discovered that we had some raw power, which we all buzzed off. We wrote ‘Rock The Nation' and ‘We're Hot' moved to Riptide practice rooms again in the Digbeth area and shared room costs with ‘Shy' who at the time were a band on the up [Excess All Areas period]. My good mate Alan Kelly had a few words with the boys and we were in.
‘Marshall Law' continued writing and played some shows in Birmingham Dave Juste gave us a chance to play at Edwards No8. Dave also became a good friend and worked hard at getting us established quickly on the rock circuit. We played our first big show only our third live gig supporting' Gypsy Queen' 1988 at Portsmouth Basin club and at the Marquee in London plus other dates on the tour. Then we went out with Hellion, ‘Metal Hammer,' 'Kerrang' and ‘Metal Forces' [great mag now kaput] all went wild about ‘Marshall Law'. From this we went to London did our first photo session for all the above Images. It was awesome meeting the likes of Dokken who had just finished we went out for a drink with them that night, We did our first interviews, I remember one time, we were at the legendary Gloucester Hotel, did an interview with Dave Ling and met Noddy Holder who was on the wagon he soon fell off just about keeping his dignity. What a very nice man Noddy is, I don't know how impressed he was with me and Andy Southwell though... Myself, Dave and Andy went to the Marquee one night after a day's interviews and photo sessions with Metal Hammer, MTV and Kerrang! Etc. We again hooked up with the guys from ‘Dokken' and they partied like M****r F*****s, funniest was a rather charged George Lynch was knocking the shit out of anyone who wanted to take him on, this also included Don Dokken and the whole road crew, nice calm dude was George when he was charged.
Marshall Law soon built up a big loyal fan base and could soon fill our own shows 1988/1989. We also played some supports to Saxon, Yngwie J Malmsteen, Candlemass, Little Angels, Wolfsbane. We also played the Birmingham Rockfest on two occasions.
Although sometimes likened to Judas Priest, Marshall Law simply don't sound like them at all!!! Judge us on our own merits we have progressed through each album and crafted our own unique brand. We have a true metal core sticking to a brand of new and old styles and techniques. Some people love labels WE DO NOT! We play a common genre of music and have our own Powerful Metal sound and formula. Marshall Law sound like Marshall Law. WORD.
In 1988 Marshall Law recorded a demo at Square Dance Studios in Derby for industry and selling we sold 3,000 at £2.50 each Bernie Jeffers was an absolute star at flogging them. Marshall Law, demo not called ‘Future Shock' it had not been wrote yet. It was just ‘Marshall Law' including ‘Marshall Law', ‘Under The Hammer'; ‘I Can Feel It In The Air Tonight'. I can here the crowd at the Pits in Milton Keynes singing it now!!!!
We recorded demos for London Records and East West but to no avail, no deal. Tracks recorded ‘Cry Out From The Dark', ‘System X',' Under the Hammer' and ‘All For Rock', ‘Feel It'.
During the summer of 1989 singed to a large indie label called Heavy Metal [FM Revolver] we started to record our self titled critically acclaimed first album/CD, ‘MARSHALL LAW'. We met with our producers Dave Keates and Ian Allen and recorded this album at Mad Hat Studios in Wolverhampton for under £4000. By this time we had gained a new bass player Roger Davies [Roulette and Mellie]. A tighter bass player and a good musician unfortunately Malcolm had to be asked to leave has he was struggling with recording in the studio not because of his size. Malcolm has since recorded many times it kicked him up the ass. The same reason for the replacement of [1990] Mick Donovan although his live work was the main reason he could not keep a constant tempo. So we enlisted Lee Morris [Paradise Lost] a young lad from Wolverhampton who had excellent ability and worked hard at getting tight. Did not need speed!
1991 We recorded Power Crazy EP limited edition 1991 from this came three songs that nearly went onto ‘Power Game' we demoed at Zella Studios in Birmingham .
We recorded ‘Cry Out From The Dark' and ‘Storming To Power'. Later to appear as bonus track on European and Japan releases of ‘Metal Detector' and ‘Warning From History'. We added the old crowd favourite 'All For Rock' and also added ‘World Of Madness' and ‘Heat Is Rising' these songs show a polished sound yet a good raw delivery. I had the flu but managed to pull out a cracking vocal performance. It was case of permanent steam in the recording booth, kind of dry ice effect in the studio. We recorded it digitally [Not for metal] needs to be re-mastered. Now deleted? I love ‘Cry Out From The Dark' was written at the same time as ‘Storming to Power' performed in Europe never played live in the UK .
In 1992 we recorded a 7-track demo for ‘Power Game'
Tracks included ‘Searching For Paradise ‘, 'Chain Of Youth', ‘Dead Zone', 'Power Game', 'Edge Of The World', ‘Storming To Power', and ‘Crucified' which we re-recorded and put on ‘Warning From History. Produced by Steve Harris [Not the Iron Maiden bass player] and Dave Matthews.
1993 Recording of Powergame which was produced by Robin George. We actually recorded this in a month what a luxury compared to previous efforts with Heavy Metal Label. Better production and songs had a more epic feel to them. We had started to grow as songwriters and musicians.
Marshall Law now embarked on UK and European tours with Thunderhead and Metal Church.
The nineties became a hard period for Marshall Law it would see the demise and the rise again of Britain's finest Metal Bands of all time. Due to Shark Record Company's and Managers it made life financially very hard also there was the rise of grunge and cynicism from the UK press the screw had turned band split up in 1994, Dec 23rd last show played at Dugals bar in Stafford. Andy Pyke, Andy Southwell and Roger Davis wrote material for a side project called ‘HOOD' some of the songs even made it onto ‘Metal Detector' and ‘Warning From History'. For example ‘Feed The Need', Addicted To Pain' and 'Blood On Blood'.
Robin George and Lee Morris played with Hood, Lee Morris joined Paradise Lost in 1995.
Roger Davies played with Toby Jepson's project last known of teaching guitar in London .
In 1997 we signed to Neat Metal; Gary Sharpe-Young [Rock Detector, one time Law representative] was AR at Neat Metal at the time and a friend. Jess Cox singed us and although Neat did a good job their distribution and mindset was very small. Not enough products pressed up and in the stores. At least product was out there for you guys to get into the Law!

On drums and bass for these shows were two friends of ours throughout the years. Paul Brookes [The Bong] on drums and on Bass was Andy Faulkner [More bands than Neil Murray] good lads and we had a great time with them.
2001 re-release of Marshall Law, Marshall Law. Different graphics, tracks in the same running order,
2001-2003 Dave and I had a pretty rough time 2001-2003 both had terrible bad luck with our health and had to cope with the loss of those dearest to us. We are now stronger because these experiences and value each new day to be able to rock again. Sorry to any one we let down in Europe, when we pulled out of the tour, I nearly died because of a lung infection at the start of the Metal Church dates. Sorry, but you will get the chance to see us again and we will make it up to you all!
However during 2002 Andy Pyke [Marshall Law], Lee Morris [Paradise Lost] Paul Solynsky [Hardware and Excalibur], and Milo Zavenic [Slammer] rehearsed a few Metallica tunes for the crack and had the fortune to play them to audiences in the UK and Holland as ‘Damage Inc'. Big Mick came over and did the out front sound in Holland and the UK .
2002 Release of Marshall Law: Anthology ‘Power Crazy' I hated the title we already had an EP called ‘Power Crazy' in 1991 not to be confused with this. It brought together a strong bunch of songs although I really wanted 'Twisted This'. 'Harbinger' and 'Screaming' on but that's record companies for you. I am sure these will be included in future ventures. I really liked the artwork and biography was not bad. Killer Tunes, dudes.
This is the only official true word on the Law from a Law-Man!
However the Anthology created a bit of interest, we thought that because of this we should get back out there and play some more shows and record again. So we have a new album ready for late 2004! ‘Axis Of Power' it will have 12 tracks fully loaded with pure power and guile.
We could feel the Metal movement gaining ground again…. It heeled wounds.
2004 re- release of the critically acclaimed ‘Powergame' in Japan , Europe and the Rest of the world. ‘Powergame' never released in Europe only 3,000 ever press in the UK on the bands System X label. ‘Power Game, JVC/Victor Japan which sold 30,000 copies in three week's gaining a Number 6 album chart position in Japan , 1993. 'Burrn!' play list and a favourite of Mr Ito also gaining many radio plays.

Some sad news Glen Viner 2003 died on his holiday yacht he unfortunately fell overboard and was viciously attacked by a 28 foot Shark. The Great White shark severed his limbs and was disembowelled. Ooh you bugger!
