The world's greatest metal band of all time is undoubtly Metallica (at least if you see to record sales). The band was formed in late 1981 in Los Angeles by singer and guitar player James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich. Within short they hired a friend of James - Ron McGovney as bass player and Dave Mustaine (formerly in a band called Panic) was hired to play lead guitars. They called themselves "Metallica: Young Metal Attack" and started playing in the L.A. area. Eventually they recorded their demo called "No Life Til Leather" which was passed around by friends of Lars. The demo gained some attention in the metal community and Metallica was given the chance to play a couple of shows in San Francisco. They were also recruited by record store owner Jon Zazula to come to New York and play some shows as well as record an album. In late 1983 they released their first album called "Kill 'Em All". By this time Ron McGovney and Dave Mustaine had been replaced by Cliff Burton and Kirk Hammet. Dave Mustaine formed his new band Megadeth same year. Since then there has been album after album coming out from the highly talented members of Metallica.

In 1984 they released their second album "Ride The Lightning" and signed with the big management agency "Q Prime" and major record company label Elektra. In 1986 they toured together with Ozzy Osbourne which helped them promoting their music and getting known throughout the country. Their new albym "Master of Puppets" reached #29 on the US charts. On September 26th, 1986, Cliff Burton was killed when their tour bus skidded out of control and flipped. Metallica didn't give up because of this tragic event. Later on Jason Newsted was chosen to be their new bass player. In 1988 they released their fourth full-length album called "And Justice For All" which reached #6 on the US charts and also received a Grammy nomination for Best Metal/Hard Rock album of the year. Later on they won another Grammy for their "One" single.

In 1991 Metallica released their legendary "black album" (or "Metallica" as the official name was) which went straight to number one all over the world. Over the next years Metallica toured all over the world and it wasn't until 1996 that their next album "Load" was released and in 1997 the follow-up "Reload". These two albums were really long recordings and the music was a little softer than their earlier releases although it's still powerful and heavy. Since then they have released two albums - "Garage Inc." in 1998 with both old and new cover songs and the latest "S&M" where Metallica plays songs from their previous albums as well as two new tracks accompanied by the San Fransisco Symphony which is most certainly one of their best releases so far. Hopefully there is even more to come from the giants of heavy metal. In January 2001 the bass player Jason Newsted decided to leave the band due to personal reasons and physical damage from the hard life on tour. Metallica has still decided to start working on a new studio album to be released in late 2001 or early 2002.
