The summoning of MORBIUS,
Portuguese band from the Northern city of Amarante,
goes back to 1997, the year
that Pinto (drums), Cristiano (guitar) and Bruno (guitar) decided to
join forces and conjure the
essence of their musical expression – by then
treading the Thrash paths.
However, the lack of permanent members hindered the band from playing
live,
thus remaining inactive insofar as concerts go.
The year was 1998, the month was June – and Marco, freshly out of the
Brutal Death Metal band OCIUM
ANIMATUS, joined the ranks of MORBIUS, being fully responsible for the
bass lines.
1999 witnessed the consolidation of the band
as a whole: due to lack of interest and musical divergences, Bruno
leaves the band
at the beginning of the year, which would be
immediately solved by the transference of Marco from the bass to the
guitar. Shortly afterwards, Vítor is
accepted within the band as he is entrusted with
the bass. The recurrent difficulties the band
had been through when trying to find themselves a
vocalist ceased with Cristiano’s initiative
to take over the place. This
line-up survived until 2000.
By the beginnings of the year the progressive
changes towards Death Metal were ever more
noticeable and the main influences
of the band read DEATH, OBITUARY,
CANNIBAL CORPSE, CARCASS,
amongst others.
Once again musical divergences dictate he
course of action and Vítor leaves the
band, being replaced by Né.
The first live performance, deflowered April 7 2001
in Amarante, was a clear hint at things to come.
The concerts that followed
were held in a number of distinct
Portuguese cities, from Amarante, Porto,
Santo Tirso, Braga to Vigo in Spain (Pub ANOETA)
and reflected the band’s statement of intent.
Particularly worthy of mention is the band’s participation
in the “METAL FORCE” contest, alongside 40 bands.
MORBIUS won an honourable first place in the podium.
April 2003 witnessed the band hit the studios
for the recording process of MORBIUS’s first,
self-financed, official register.
'Morbivs' was recorded at the OXIGÉNIO
studios, between April and May 2003,
produced by Narciso Fernandes,
Pedro Mouga and the band.
The curse of the bass player once again
erupted and Né left the band in the
course of the recording sessions,
due to personal and musical divergences.
The band then decides to invite Rui to the bass.
Marco is responsible for the bass lines
in the recording process.
The promotion and further dissemination of
the band's debut 'Morbivs' is planned and a lot
of concerts all over Portugal are already booked.
The main purpose is to establish good contacts
with labels, publications and radio shows.
