Mucus Membrane was formed in 1996 by Tom Persons (ex-Pessimist, Psypheria) and Vinnie Matthews (Dying Fetus) as a side project to provide an outlet for their most brutal musical tendencies. After collaborating with Sparky Voyles (Dying Fetus) on a few songs they recorded the "Shallow Existence" mini CD which was released on Wild Rags Records in early '97. At this point Tom moved to San Jose, California and joined Psypheria (then called Enthroned).
