Band biography

Obscurant is a Finnish band that performs mid-tempo death metal with a heavy touch of melancholy and depression. Obscurant is quite often being compared to the newer style of Hypocrisy due to the somewhat similar use of massive guitar-walls and straight-forwarded song-structures combined with keyboards and occasional clean vocals.

The band got started as a solo-project of Luukkainen when he was doing his military service during the later half of the year 2000. When songs really started coming, Luukkainen came to the conclusion that he needed a complete line-up instead of doing everything by himself. As an outcome of this realization, a full line-up was gathered in quite short period of time. Luukkainen didn't have to waste too much energy on finding suitable members because they all were to be found from amongst his friends and co-musicians in Jyväskylä's metal scene.

With Luukkainen on vocals and lead guitar, Kaakkolahti on guitar, Simonen on keyboards, Honkonen on bass and Järvinen on drums, Obscurant played live two times in the autumn of the year 2001. Due to the amazing response from the audience, the band decided to contact Woodcut Records to see if they had some spark of interest towards this kind of death metal act. They did. Obscurant signed the contract that Woodcut offered them and the things got going on full speed. The recording sessions of Obscurant's debut full-length album were scheduled to take place at Sundi-Coop Studio in the break of March and April 2002. Obscurant spent two weeks recording and mixing the ten actual tracks and a couple of bonus songs. The result was the birth of a dynamic and atmospheric death metal album that bears the name "Lifeform: Dead".
