In 1989 two men that called themselves Grusom (now known as Galder) and Tjodalv started a band that mainly played covers of Metallica and Slayer. In 1993 they released a self titled demo under the band name Requiem, printed in 50 copies. The demo was influenced by the flourishing death metal scene. In 1993 they also changed their name to Old Man´s Child. The original line-up consisted of Grusom, Jardar and Tjodalv. They were first planning to play death metal but soon they discovered a mutual love for extreme black metal. In November 1994 they recorded their first demo called "In The Shades Of Life" at Stovner RF in Norway. Just before they entered the studio they were joined by former Dimmu Borgir bassist Brynjard Tristan. Their demo gave them a record deal with Norwegian Hot Records. The demo was first set for release through Ancient Lore Creations as a split album with Ved Buens Ende but due to some problems that never happened.
