The Dutch black metal band Ordo Draconis formed in the summer of 1996 by Moloch and Rahab. Soon they were joined by Bob, Timo and Midhir. The drummer Timo had to leave after a few months though since he did not fit in the band and was replaced in January of 1997 by a new drummer called Arco. At first they only played covers by bands like Bathory, Samael, Katatonia, Rotting Christ and Ophthalamia. However, they started working on material of their own and in 1997 they released their debut demo called "When The Cycle Ends". The demo resulted in a few label offers but they decided not to sign any of them. In January 1999 they reocrded a demo MCD entitled "In Speculis Noctis" with producer Hans Pieters in the highly professional Excess Studios in Rotterdam (Sinister, Danse Macabre etc...). This cd was released in 1500 copies. A deal was then signed with Skaldic Art Productions for their debut album, a German label run by the man behind Falkenbach.
