In about 1989 Grutle Kjellson (later of Enslaved) joined a local metal band in Valevaag, Norway, where he lived. The band was called Insanity and played thrash metal with no talent but lots of enthusiasm. After a couple a months he realized that the band was going nowhere so he started to look around for a proper band. Grutle and his good friend Hein Frode Hansen (later of Theatre Of Tragedy) had talked about starting a death metal band for a while and now they found a young guitarist named Ivar Bjørnson in a thrash metal band called Obnoxious. They then quit their bands and started the brutal death metal act called Phobia. In June 1991 Phobia split up but Ivar and Grutle moved on to start Enslaved.
