Swedish stoner metallers The Quill started out as Quil in the late 80s. Having parted ways with original vocalist Tommy Carlsson after the release of their debut album they changed their name. The debut album as The Quill was preceded by a 1993 demo entitled "Another Fruitful Day" which led to a deal with Megarock Records. Late 1993 saw the band parting ways with bassist Peter Holm who was replaced by Roger Nilsson. As Megarock went out of business they signed a deal with leading publishing company Warner / Chappell and recorded a promotional CD in late 1997. Since May they had also parted ways with keyboard player Anders Haglund, opting for a heavier sound.
The band's debut was recorded at the Berno Studio in Malmö and released in Europe in March 1995. A video was recorded for the track "Jet Of Water". It was well received by media and the leading Swedish newspaper "Aftonbladet" voted the album as number 70 among the top 100 albums of the year. A short national tour with Abstrakt Algebra was to follow and in the summer they performed at the Karlshamn Rock Festival (now Sweden Rock Festival) together with bands like Black Sabbath and Fleetwood Mac. A German tour had been booked but was cancelled due to problems with the record company.
Autumn 1998 saw the band touring Sweden together with Bullhorn. The summer of 1999 saw a return to the Sweden Rock Festival. During the first few years The Quill had mostly played the Swedish bar circuit but now they were set to conquer Europe. After the release of 'Hooray! It's a Deathtrip' in 2003 the band appeared on the prestigious Wacken Open Air festival in Germany as well as Metal Dayz in Switzerland and a couple of minor Swedish festivals. April 2004 saw the band securing a support slot on the European tour of Monster Magnet alongside Norwegian rockers Gluecifer.
In May 2005 the band parted ways with bassist Roger Nilsson. A replacement was found in Robert Triches in August. March and April 2006 saw the band undertaking a European tour consisting of dates in Sweden, Germany and Holland, followed by yet another appearance at the Sweden Rock Festival in early June. Having parted ways with their record company SPV / Steamhammer they recorded a demo during the first week of December at the home of the band's longtime friend and co-worker Johan Lord in Blomstermåla close to their hometown of Mönsterås in order to procure a new record deal.
