RESPONSE NEGATIVE began in September of 2001. Mark Dykstra's adoration for Savatage and classic thrash like Overkill set the stage for what was to come.
As Mark's material progressed, so did the need for a vocalist. Through mutual friends, Nick Barlow was introduced to the project. With such influences as Anthrax, Nuclear Assault and Testament, Nick brought intense lyrics and brutal vocals which has become the defining element of the band.
Tony Viera who played drums in Nick's former band stepped forward to fill in on bass. Mark, Tony and Nick began creating a fierce collection of songs. The next six months were spent playing gigs with various local drummers.
The experience of playing live made them realize that they needed a heavier, fuller sound. They needed a second guitarist. Through mutual friends, Mark was introduced to a long time inspiration, the undisputed Godfather of Thrash Metal, Bobby Gustafson, the original guitarist from the legendary band OVERKILL (from 1982-1991), who after seeing the professionalism and potential of the band was the next to join!!
With Mark, Bobby, Nick and Tony on a non stop creative frenzy the band was thrust to a new level. Finding a permanent drummer capable of matching the aggressive music produced by this foursome. The search ended with James McCourt, drummer and long time friend of the band. Jim's extraordinary technique was the perfect combination to complete the circle.
After Tony left a few months back, The last task was to find a permanent bassist, and Andrew Goodyer has taken a strong hold to the position.
With a style all their own, RESPONSE NEGATIVE combines the influences of metals' past and updates it for a more modern, aggressive sound!
On April 21st, 2005, Bobby Gustafson announced that the band had split up due to "lack of professionalism and drive from within the band and a lack of label interest". He also announced plans to launch a new project during the next couple of months together with frontman Nick Barlow. On April 26th, 2005, the group's drummer, Jim McCourt, had the following to say: "While it is true that Bobby is no longer with RESPONSE NEGATIVE, we wish him nothing but the best," McCourt told BLABBERMOUTH.NET. "With that being said, auditions for a new guitarist have already begun. We have been inundated with e-mails from guitarists who want to audition.
"We thank everyone for their support, and again wish to express the fact that we’re not going anywhere! As soon as auditions are complete we will be announcing some new tour dates, and then it's back to the studio. We're very proud of our new material and we can't wait for everyone to hear it."
