ROUGH SILK was founded in 1989 by the half-english/half-german c. FERDY DOERNBERG ( keyboards, slide-guitars ), who´s got a good reputation besides ROUGH SILK as a studio musician and sidekick for acts like for example AXEL RUDI PELL, CRIMSON GLORY, TARAXACUM, the solo-projects of the HELLOWEEN-members Roland Grapow and Markus Großkopf, METALIUM, MASTERPLAN, POWERGOD and FREEDOM CALL, and RALF SCHWERTNER ( bass ). In the year 2000 Doernberg also released his rock-musical "STORYTELLER´S RAIN" ( featuring AXEL RUDI PELL, MIKE TERRANA, TOM ANGELRIPPER , all ROUGH SILK-members and many more ). The original members JAN BARNETT and HILMER STAACKE left the band after the third and the fourth album and had been replaced by THOMAS LUDOLPHY ( vocals 1998 - 2002 ), ANDREAS LASZEWSKI ( guitars - only 1996 ) and NILS WUNDERLICH ( guitars - since 1997 ).
The original drummer HERBERT HARTMANN has returned in 2001 after he had left the band after the 3rd album and got replaced by CURT DOERNBERG ( 1997-2001 ) Rough Silk´s last album, "Symphony of Life" was co-produced by JON OLIVA, the mastermind of the American legends SAVATAGE. The band and Oliva became friends as ROUGH SILK were supporting SAVATAGE on two European tours. Oliva also sang a duet for the song "Lucifer" on the album. In March 2002 THOMAS LUDOLPHY left the band due to personal reasons but only a few minutes later it was clear, that the band would not look for a new singer. ( original words by FERDY DOERNBERG ) : ….The new ROUGH SILK singer is ........Nobody !!!
What ??????? Here´s the story : Nils, Ralf, Herbert and myself looked each other in the eye after Thomas had left and asked ourselves : "Do we need a new singer ?"The answer was a simple : "No !" - from that day on Herbert, Nils and I share the lead-vocals equally. The background is, that we all are are experienced lead singers. Nils did lead-vocals in a top 40 band, Herbert was the leadsinger and the drummer in a band called Albatros and I also did lead-vocals before even though with ROUGH SILK I sing a lot more aggressive than on my solo-albums. So now we have 3 lead-singers ( Nils, Herbert and myself ) instead of one and I can tell you : it works really well. Nils has a high voice and is able to sing the -once performed by Jan Barnett- songs from the first albums without problems.Herbert´s voice is lower and very warm. And me ? Well, I simply scream around a bit !!!! Because we all sang a lot to perform the Harmony-Vocals, that were part of Rough Silk all time it was easier than we thought it would……"
Until the present day the band has perfomed already many concerts without a leadsinger and here it is now : The first CD in the new line-up as a four-piece - "END OF INFINITY". It contains 12 outstanding songs in the typical - but improved - ROUGH SILK-style that are very refreshing without denying the roots of the band at any time. The changing lead-vocals ( each of the three sings 4 songs ! ) also bring many different colors into the picture.
Even more different colors come from the use of many exotic instruments like dobro, slide-guitar, saz, accordion, mandolin, hawaiian-guitar, etc. Because the band´s line up features four multi-instrumentalists they performed all these instruments themselves and didn´t just pay like some other bands some guest musicians - or even worse : program samplers - to do it. Even the brass-section was none other than Ferdy ( trumpet ) and Ralf ( trombone ) ! Also the impressing harmony- and choir-vocals were performed by the band members without any guest vocalists. The only guest on "END OF INFINITY" is the 83 year-old violinplayer MARTIN DOERNBERG ( Ferdy´s father ) on the song "the fiddler on the skeleton horse". It´s the first recording of father and son playing together ever.
The album, produced by FERDY DOERNBERG in his own Droehnwerk-studio, manifests Rough Silk´s unique style perfectly : unusual, but always catchy songwriting with a lot of killer-hooks meets intelligent lyrics ( written by Ferdy Doernberg ) , virtuosity and - last not least - a good sense of humor and a lot of crazy ideas.
So there´s only one thing left to say : "be openminded !!!!!!!"
