S.O.D. (a.k.a. Stormtroopers Of Death) came into existence
as a one-off side project of ANTHRAX musicians Scott Ian (b. Scott
Rosenfeld, guitar) and Charlie Benante (drums).
Taking time out during the recording of Anthrax's "Spreading The
Disease" in 1985, Scott started drawing some comics. He invented a guy, a
typical right-wing redneck in the form of a living skeleton that smokes
cigars, hates everyone and everything, with an insane sense of wrong and
right, who was called "Sgt. D". Then he started writing slogans like
"Speak English or Die" and turned them into songs.
Scott and Charlie asked NUCLEAR ASSAULT bass player Dan Lilker
(originally a member of Anthrax) and roadie Billy Milano (vocals, ex-PSYCHOS)
to join them, to make use of three days' free studio time. The result
was "Speak English Or Die", a manic fusion of thrash metal and hardcore
styles that had both humour and considerable crossover appeal.
Milano went on to form M.O.D. (a.k.a. Method Of Destruction), using
exactly the same musical blueprint (indeed, some of Scott Ian's S.O.D.
lyrics would be re-used in this project). After releasing "Speak English
Or Die", the band played infrequently over the years, but frequently
proclaimed that no future albums would be released.
Seven years later, they played a show at the Ritz (March 21st, 1992).
The record of that show "Live At Budokan" was released that same year.
Sporadic reunions have continued to occur over recent years and another
seven years later S.O.D. released their second studio album "Bigger
Than The Devil". The artwork of the album cover is an IRON MAIDEN "The
Number Of The Beast" parody.
The next year S.O.D. released a 2-track 7" (which was also included as
a 3" bonus CD on a special edition of "Bigger Than The Devil") where
the title track is a killer song where S.O.D. meets SLAYER, and the
second track "Raise Your Sword" is a "tribute" to MANOWAR. Once again they
did some humorous cover artwork, this time a parody of Slayer's "Seasons
In The Abyss".
S.O.D. also contributed previously unreleased tracks to "A Tribute To
The Scorpions" (Nuclear Blast, 2001) and "New York's Hardest, volume 3"
(Go Kart, 2001).
Following personal disputes between Billy Milano and the two Anthrax
members (Scott Ian and Charlie Benante) concerning the "Behind The Music"
VH-1 program on Anthrax (Milano felt that Danny Lilker was slighted)
the band is once again disbanded.
