Spiral Architect was formed in Oslo, Norway, 1993, when lead guitarist Steinar Gundersen
(King´s Quest) joined the remains of Anesthesia consisting of Kaj Gornitzka (guitars),
Lars K. Norberg (bass) and Asgeir Mickelson (drums). The idea was to integrate jazz-fusion
elements with uncompromizing metal. The first recordings from the band were the songs
"Fountainhead" and "Purpose" which were released on the compilation CD "A Gathering" in 1995.
These songs were also released as an independent demo in February 1996 to promote the band
worldwide. The band had always been lacking a real vocalist and the vocals on the demo were
therefore done by Leif Knashaug. In 1996 they were joined by the vocalist Øyvind Hægeland (ex-Manitou).
In 1997 the band signed a record deal with the American based The Laser´s Edge/Sensory label.
The debut album "A Sceptic´s Universe" was recorded in June 1998 at Village Productions,
Texas, USA, with producer Neil Kernon (Yes, Brand X, Queensrÿche, Nevermore). The album
showed the band´s development into an even more technical style. The album was released
in Japan on December 16th 1999 (with the Fates Warning cover "Prelude To Rain") and the rest
of the world on January 18th 2000. During the recordings of their debut album Kaj left the
band and in November 1999 he was replaced by Andreas Jonsson.
