Anno Domini 1099: The first of seven crusades is over. The Holy Land is controlled by
occidental Knights of the Cross and Jerusalem is proclaimed a Christian Kingdom under
the reign of Gottfried von Bouillons.
Anno Domini 1291: After almost 200 years - filled with senseless wars - the occidental
Christians have to leave their last base in the Orient. That was bad luck!
Anno Domini 2002: In the heart of Hessen a bunch of hard-boiled metal guys gets up to
start a crusade of another kind. And it seems to be that their mission could be more promising
and successful than the mission of the papal slaughterers back then.
Recorded under direction of the producer legend Tommy Newton
(a.o. both "Keeper Of The Seven Keys" milestones of Helloween) in the Area51 Studios the
meanwhile fourth officially released Squealer album "Under The Cross" again offers the well-tried
mixture out of trashy riffing and catching melodies. This time however, contrary to the album's
two successful and very melodic predecessors "The Prophecy" (1999) and "Made For Eternity" (2000),
the album is reaching a little more towards the harder sections. Result: Melodic Power Thrash
and POWER spelled with damn capital letters. A song such as "Facing The Death" is, for example,
looking at its riffs, coming close to Fear Factory, is, however, crowned by a strong, timeless
and wonderfully ear-catching melody - very typical for the band. Fancy a good head-banging?
Then you have to listen to "Painful Lust" or the strong future live hymn "Thinking Allowed!".
That melodies are still playing a big role in Squealer songs, is proven by "My Last Goodbye"
following the traditions of "Made For Eternity". And also Squealer typical songs can be found on
the album. On the one hand the ear catching "Fade Away" with the Gothic touch showing band
leader and Äppler drinker Henner's softer side although he is known for rough shouting in his
songs (and for all of you who haven't got a clue about Äppler: Äppler is simply apple wine - one
of the most important and nutritious and also light basic food stuff in the South and
the Middle of Hessen). On the other hand there is the very individual and also excellent
cover of the Johnny Wakelin hit "In Zaire", which comes stomping out of the speakers and takes a
few side steps towards the current Metal trends or rather trend Metal.
Speaking of stomping: The album was mixed by Mikko Karmila, who was also already responsible for
giving the finishing touches to both predecessors of Squealer's current album. He got "a little
help from" Andy Sneap (Machine Head, Nevermore, Testament, etc.), also one of the well known mixers.
Squealer themselves took care of the remaining stomp, fully relying on the perfectly harmonic
guitar duo Lars Döring/Michael Schiel and on double bass-God Mike Terrana
(a.o. Yngwie Malmsteen, Rage). The sound is seasoned by bassist Michael Kaspar, whose bass guitar
gets perfectly along with Terrana's drums and whose straight playing contributed a great deal to
the awesome and ass-tight sound of "Under the Cross". In short: Squealer is heading for the
winning line with this album!
But what would a real crusade be without the respective ideological framework?
See... Therefore the majority of the lyrics is concentrating on the topics faith and religion.
Sometimes funny, ironic - in "Painful Lust" they are singing about a monk who's jerking off (sic!)
, sometimes more serious and, unfortunately, currently more topical than ever - the very
cynical song "Facing The Death", dealing with blind fanaticism going until mass murder - the themes
are looked at in different ways. The lyrics, however, never become dogmatic or preaching. One of
the songs of "Under The Cross" hits the nail best squarely on the head: "Thinking Allowed!"
Andy Allendörfer, founder of the band and their label AFM Records, died in a car crash in January 2005.
