Quick! Define punk rock in two words! Blink 182? Wrong!
Green Day? Yeah, nice try. Since way back in the stone age (circa 1982),
Suicidal Tendencies has been paving the way for bands with something to
say.
The Muir brothers had moved out of their parents' house and were living
with friends in Venice, California. It evolved into a type of
musician's commune, with the house tenants throwing a party every month to pay
the rent. As the parties got bigger, the band began to play. As the band
began to play, the parties got even bigger, until finally Suicidal
Tendencies was renting a hall.
Their self-titled debut came out on Frontier Records in 1983. It
featured the now classic "Institutionalized." (ed. Note: 'Institutionalized'
was included on the soundtrack to Repo Man - every car has one.)
In 1987, Suicidal Tendencies released Join the Army. It was the first
underground rock release on an independent label to crack the Billboard
Top 100 Pop Album chart. Suicidal Tendencies had refined their mix of
punk / thrash / funk, but still forged ahead with confrontational
lyrics. These drew the lovely attention of the Parents' Music Resource Center
(PMRC) in 1989. Suicidal Tendencies stood up to the PMRC, which
resulted in their albums being yanked from stores.
In the early 90's, Suicidal Tendencies toured with Guns n' Roses,
Metallica, and Iggy Pop and received two Grammy nominations.
Though their influence can be heard in some of the trendy fake rebels
on the ariwaves today (ed. Note: not on 97X, though - thank god!);
unlike those bands, Suicidal Tendencies have never encouraged their
listeners to blame others for their problems. As Mike Muir puts it: "(People)
don't want to have the finger pointed at them… Why is your life fucked
up? Because you were the one leading it, and you did a shitty job." Now,
that's punk rock!
