The band's formal debut ended up tagged to the CD version of
Kerplunk — an odd move, not merely because it was three years older
than that album, but featured a completely different drummer, Al Sobrante.
On its own, Sweet Children (also a name of a song on the release and
the band's original moniker) is pretty much what all other early Green
Day was like — catchy, fun, but generally unremarkable beyond that. It's
also the most obviously low-budget recording of the band's career; even
the Slappy and 1000 Hours EPs sound much more full bodied than the
hollow-sounding drums and flat levels here. The three originals are fair
enough for what they are, Armstrong's voice and general approach already
recognizable, but that's about it. The ringer is the concluding cover
of the Who's "My Generation," with an amusing twist via the mini solos.
From 1989 to now, this band has now disbanded and Billie Joe Armstrong
and Mike Dirnt formed their current band Green Day with one of !
their popular albums released on Reprise Records starting with Dookie
(1994), Insomniac (1995), Nimrod (1997) and Warning (2000).
