The Thanatos Family Tree - A True Horror Story. For some people it's difficult to find the right people for your band; ask someone like Death's Chuck Schuldiner; he can tell you all about it! The same goes for Stephan Gebédi; since he started the band in April '84 no less than 15 people formed part of Thanatos! Does this make Stephan a bellowing tyrant or does it say something about the attitude of a lot of musicians?! Who knows? Who cares?!
Here's a little piece of band history… In April 1984 Stephan Gebédi (guitar/vocals) teamed up with his schoolmate Remco de Maaijer (guitars) and together with Marcel van Arnhem (drums) they formed the first line up of Thanatos. From the very beginning Thanatos played a mixture of fast aggressive thrash metal and brutal death metal. At the end of 1984 they recorded the infamous "Speed Kills"-demo in an attic room, using lousy equipment. Nevertheless, this demo was voted '6th demo of the year 1985' in Metal Forces' Readers Poll. In 1985 the band split up because of (you guessed it!) musical differences. In 1985 Stephan jammed with a couple of musicians in Utrecht, but returned to Rotterdam, where the new line up was completed.
In 1986 the second demo tape "Rebirth" was released featuring Stephan on guitar/vocals, André Scherpenberg on bass, Remo van Arnhem (drums) and Rob de Bruijn (drums). Drummer Rob had to leave because he couldn't keep up with the rest of the band. In 1987 guitar hero Mark Staffhorst (ex-Second Hell) joined the band and the line up of Stephan, Mark, André and Remo recorded the extremely aggressive "The Day before Tomorrow" demo; arguably the band's best demo tape, which gained Thanatos quite some popularity in the Underground Scene.
Bassplayer André was replaced by Erwin de Brouwer, who used to play guitar in a band called Killer Force. André went on to form the progressive metalband Vigilant. In 1988 guitarist Mark couldn't combine the band and his study anymore, so Erwin switched to guitar and became Thanatos' second guitar hero. The line up was completed by former Killing Elevator-bassist Ed Boeser.
This bunch (see photo) recorded the "Omnicoitor" demo in 1989 which finally resulted in the long awaited record deal. Erwin, Stephan, Ed and Remo stuck together and recorded both the "Emerging from the Netherworlds"(1990) and "Realm of Ecstasy"(1992) albums. A fucked up relationship with the record company and some attitude problems within the band resulted in the untimely death of one of the pioneer bands of Death/ Thrash Metal.
In 1994 Stephan and Erwin teamed up with Elegy-drummer Dirk Bruinenberg and bassplayer Peter van Wees in a band called Church of Indulgence; the band wrote about 10 songs and were ready to record a demo or CD…unfortunately this never happened; the band was put on ice because some band members had other obligations. Dirk went on and became pretty successful with melodic/prog rockers Elegy; Peter formed a speed/thrash metal band called Incoming and Erwin teamed up with ex-Thanatos bassplayer Ed Boeser in a melodic/alternative metalband called Smalltown.
At the end of 1998 he bought all rights of both Thanatos albums from Shark Records and in July 1999 he reformed Thanatos, featuring drummer Aad Kloosterwaard (also in Sinister and Houwitser), bassplayer Theo van Eekelen (also in Houwitser) and guitarist Paul Baayens (also in Cremation)
Because Aad and Theo couldn't give the necessary 110 percent -due to a busy schedule with Houwitser- the rhythmsection was replaced medio 2001 by drummer Yuri Rinkel (also in Liar of Golgotha) and basplayer Marco de Bruin.
