The Damned was a UK based punk band that was born in 1976 (an earlier band with several of the members in had existed prior to this). They were the first British punk band to release an album and also the first one to tour the United States. On January 6th, 1976, they played their first live show together with The Sex Pistols. The band quickly signed a deal with Stiff Records and released their first 45 the same year, followed by the "Anarchy In The Uk" tour with The Sex Pistols, Clash and Johnny Thunders. In April 1977 the band did a US tour with The Dead Boys, followed by a UK tour in May. In November a new UK tour took place with Jon Moss replacing Rat Scabies on drums. Late that year The Damned left their label Stiff Records.
In February 1978 the band split up with a farewell show taking place at the Rainbow in London in April. In September they did a reunion show as Les Punks with a new line-up featuring Motörhead's Lemmy. Lemmy was however replaced by Algy Ward in December as they did several UK shows under the new monicker The Doom. In April 1979 they signed a new record deal with Chiswick Records and in June / July they did another US tour. In October they released a 45 called "Smash It Up" which was banned by the BBC.
In January 1980 Algy Ward was replaced by Paul Gray on bass. Several new releases followed and in late 1981 keyboard player Roman Jugg joined the band. In 1983 Paul Gray was replaced with Bryn Merrick prior to a club tour. In August 1984 the band played in front of 40000 people at Brockwell Park and soon after this founding member Captain Sensible left the band. In September The Damned signed a new deal with MCA Records and at about this time Roman Jugg moved to guitar.
Several chart releases followed in 1985 and in January 1986 the Eloise 45 became the biggest hit in the band's history, reaching No 2 in the national charts. In April an Australian tour took place and in July Captain Sensible joined the band on stage once again for some 10th anniversary gigs. In June 1988 a reunion show took place in London featuring the original line-up along with Roman and Bryn. In october a US tour was done with the Vanian / Scabies / Jugg / Merrick line-up.
In July 1989 a farewell tour was made in the UK and US with the original Vanian / Scabies / Sensible / James line-up. In December a UK tour took place with the original line-up. In September 1991 a reunion show was played with Dave, Rat, Captain, Brian and Paul Gray in the line-up, followed by a Japanese tour in October and UK dates with The Ramones in December.
More reunion shows were played in July 1992 with the Vanian / Scabies / Sensible / James / Gray line-up. In December 1993 a UK tour took place with a new line-up featuring Dave, Rat, Kris Dollimore, Allan Lee Shaw and Moose. In 1994 they did a Japanese tour in April, a European tour in June, UK dates in October / November and a full UK tour in December. Another UK tour took place in February 1995 and in July the last live dates of the Vanian / Scabies / Dollimore / Moose line-up were played.
A new line-up with Dave, Captain, Paul Gray, Garrie Dreadful and Monty played some UK dates in February 1996 and in August new shows were played with Patricia Morrison replacing Paul Gray on bass, followed by a Japanese tour in September. In 1997 it was time for UK dates in March, an Australian tour in April and more UK dates in December. A US tour took place in February / March 1998 and in December Garrie Dreadful played his last gig with The Damned at the London Forum.
In April 1999 The Damned played several UK dates with new drummer Spike and in June they played at the "Holidays In The Sun" festival. In September / October a new drummer called Pinch was introduced through a US tour. Another UK tour was done in March / April 2000, followed by a German tour in May / June. In November they signed a new deal with Nitro Records, owned by Dexter Holland of The Offspring. In March 2001 they started recording a new album in Los Angeles.
