Rising from the ashes of The Keep in the Winter of 1998, The Gates of Slumber, fruit of the imagination of Guitarist/Vocalist Karl Simon was started as a backlash against the stoner rock trend prevalent at the time; the mission was to drown those would-be usurpers in their own gore.
The early days of The Gates of Slumber were full of disappointment and frustration. Line ups fluctuated from month to month. In the Spring of 2000 with the help of Jamie Walters (Boulder/Midnight/Abdullah/Destructor) the first demo was produced. "Blood Encrusted Deth Axe," the ultra-cult demo featured Walters on drums and a shadowy figure known only as Dr. Phibes on the bass. Due to other commitments, Phibes could not commit to the band at that time, and the line up fell apart. After this setback, the band lapsed into dormancy.
Then in the Summer of 2002, a line up finally materialized. Featuring Chris Gordon, a local club musician on the drums and long time rager Brad Elliot on the bass guitar, the band launched a frenzied practice schedule and in the winter entered Castle Esterline studios to record a two song demo CD. The demo featured the songs "The Judge" b/w "Stitched Back From Death" and was warmly received by the doom metal underground. The band took the stage for the first time on St. Valentines day 2003.
Shortly after this line up, problems developed and on the eve of performing at the first Born Too Late Fest in Rochester, NY, drummer Chris Gordon departed. Enter Chuck Brown - founding member of The Keep, and Karl's long time friend, in a few short weeks the band became several degrees tighter. The appearance at Born Too Late was a display of strength that further caught the attention of the doom scene... sadly a few months later after providing local support for the Doomination tour, bassist Brad Elliot departed the band.
Enter Jason McCash, The Keep's original guitarist, this time on bass. With this addition The Gates of Slumber moved from strength to strength. In the year following Jason's joining the band, The Gates of Slumber have signed to breakout Belgian metal label Final Chapter, and subsequently released their debut record "...the Awakening." The band is preparing at this time for it's first ever tour - and on European soil no less! The tour will kick off in April of '05 and take the band through the heart of Europe; Sweden, Holland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Endland, and ending in Belgium. The Gates of Slumber will be featured at the third Doom Shall Rise Festival in Gopingen, Germany (www.doomshallrise.de) and Belgian Doom Night.
The next few months will see The Gates of Slumber enter the studio to record and EP for Hellride Records. The EP, titled "The Leech" will be a display of newer material and one of the most favored songs from the original demo: and it shows the band at once delving into the seemingly divergent paths of the extremely heavy, and extremely musical. Look for "The Leech" in early Spring of 2005.
In November 2005 the band signed a new contract with the Swedish label I Hate Records.
