The Go-Go's photo
The American ska punk rock band The Go-Go's was formed at a party in Los Angeles, California, in May 1978 under the original monicker The Misfits. They had their rehearsals in a punk club called The Masque which was located in the basement of a porno theater. The following year they changed their name to The Go-Go's after having replaced their original drummer Elissa Bello. They rose to fame after having supported Madness on tour. Moving away from the punk sound towards more pop oriented domains they signed a deal with IRS Records and released "Beauty And The Beat" which topped the charts for six weeks. The next album was not as successful and in 1985 the band broke up. Around 1983 Belinda Carlisle had a $300 a day cocaine habit and Caffey had a heroin addiction as well. The drug abuse and hedonism in the band probably led to its demise in the end. Belinda Carlisle later on found fame as a successful solo artist. The Go-Go's had five top 40 hits in their career.
