The Haunted started to take form in the end of July 1996 when Jensen (ex Seance) was looking
for members to complete his new project. On the 27th of July the Björler brothers Anders and
Jonas decided to leave At The Gates. The drummer of ATG, Adrian Erlandsson, was a good friend
of Jensen and they started playing together at the old rehearsal place of ATG. Soon John
Zwetsloot (ex Dissection, Cardinal Sin) joined them for the rehearsals. Jonas Björler also
joined the band on bass and they continued writing new songs together. After a few weeks
Anders Björler replaced John since his playing style didn´t fit the musical direction of
the band.
The band was still lacking a vocalist. A few people were approached - Rogga (Merciless),
Oscar (In A Pigs Eye), Tony (Satanic Slaughter, Witchery) and Peter Dolving (Mary Beats Jane).
A few tapes were passed around but nothing happened. In the beginning of 1997 Adrian started
to play with another band called Hyperhug. He also felt that there were no ambitions in
the band due to the lack of a singer. He decided to leave the band and play full-time with
Hyperhug. A new drummer seemed hard to find. They approached several people like Anders
Jivarp (Dark Tranquility), Hans Nilsson (Liers In Wait, Diabolique), Snowy Shaw (ex King
Diamond) and Ole Öhman (ex Dissection, Opthalamia). Ole rehearsed with the band a couple of
times but it didn´t work out that well.
During the spring of 1997 Hyperhug rehearsed intensely and played one liv show. During that
show the singer had his hearing severely damaged and Hyperhug therefore decided to split up.
Adrian wanted to go back playing more aggressive music again and he once again joined The
Haunted to replace Ole. Earache Records now took some interest in the band and offered them
a place on the Earplugged 2 CD compilation. The band accepted the offer but was still lacking
a vocalist. With the recordings only 1 ½ weeks away Adrian suggested Peter Dolving (Mary Beats
Jane) who did the vocals on the two tracks "Undead" and "Shattered" which were recorded at
Studio Fredman in Gothenburg. It was now decided that Dolving was going to be their vocalist.
The band had completed material for a full-length album and their self-titled debut was
recorded at Studio Fredman. The album was very well received by the metal magazines and
in late fall 1998 they went on a small tour in the UK with Napalm Death. Coming home from
the tour Peter left the band since he was fed up with label problems and wanted to concentrate
on a band called Zen-Monkey which later on split up. In the spring of 1999 they managed
to find a new vocalist called Marco Aro (Face Down) who had almost dropped his singing career
but was more than happy to join the band. They also did some festival shows in the late
spring like Dynamo Open Air and Hultsfred.
In the summer of 1999 Testament wanted The Haunted to go on tour with them in the US. However,
in the middle of rehearsing and planning the tour Adrian left the band once again, this time
for Cradle Of Filth since he was unhappy with the label's way of dealing with them. Jensen
managed to get in touch with a Danish drummer called Per Möller Jensen (Invocator) who at
this time had joined a band called Konkhra. Per was however interested to do the US tour
and came to Gothenburg in the middle of July to start rehearsing with them. The tour lasted
throughout August 1999 and when they returned home they started working on their second
album right away. Per now became a full-time drummer for the band. Their second album called
"The Haunted Made Me Do It" was released in 2000.
In early June 2004 The Haunted signed a new world-wide record deal with Century Media.
