The history of the band Theatre of Tragedy starts in 1993 when a band called Suffering Grief was formed in Stavanger, Norway. At that time the band didn´t even have their own rehearsing room but had to drive from place to place. The first songs that the band wrote and played together were more death metal-like than the TOT songs of today, based on the melodic piano playing from Lorentz Aspen (who was only 15 years old when he joined the band!) and heavy guitars from Tommy Lindal and Pål Bjåstad. The old Shakespearean lyrics by Raymond I. Rohonyi and the great soprano singing from Liv Kristine Espenæs has also been very important for the success of the band since those days. In 1994 the band changed their name to Le Reine Noir which they only kept for a few weeks. In the end of april 1994 they finally changed their name to Theatre of Tragedy at about the same time that Liv Kristine joined the band.
Since 1994 TOT has released four full-length albums - Theatre of Tragedy (1995), Velvet darkness they fear (1996), Aégis (1998) and Musique (2000). Their music has developed a lot during these years. The first album has many melodic piano parts from Lorentz as well as death metal growling vocals from Raymond. The second one is a little heavier with more guitars and less melodic piano but the growling is still there. Aégis is very different from the first two albums and is perhaps their best album so far (at least their best seller). The music is a lot more electronic but still very melodic. The vocals are softer and more emotional. Theatre of Tragedy has developed very well, they play very melodic emotional music with great old English lyrics. The only thing you may miss from their early years is the melodic piano which mostly has been replaced by keyboards. The latest album "Musique" was a real disappointment to me. It is not bad but they have completely abandoned their old emotional and beautiful music and the old Shakespearian English has been replaced with modern futuristic texts - the things that once made the band unique in the world of music. The band might still be unique, modern and creative but they have now started their journey out of the metal world.
In 1999 guitarist Tommy Olsson decided to leave the band to concentrate on his other band Elusive and his family. In the year 2000 the band also parted way with their bassist Eirik
T. Saltrø. In January 2001 their long-time session guitarist Vegard K. Thorsen became a permanent member of the band.
In September 2005 the band signed a new contract with the German label AFM Records.
