Thou Shalt Suffer was formed in 1991 by Ihsahn and Samoth. The same year they formed Emperor but Ihsahn continued working on Thou Shalt Suffer as a solo project now and then. In the year 2000 he signed a deal with Candlelight Records and released their first studio album (the debut album was a collection of old demo material). At first the band was known under the names Dark Device, Xerasia and Embryonic, before finally settling with Thou Shalt Suffer.
