Threethirteen guitarist Mark Kelson and bassist James Hunt
have always had a long standing (and frequently frustrated) plan of
forming a power trio to play the kind of melodic rock music that they both
love, but it was not until they met drummer Sean Balfour that their
dreams materialised. The three held their first rehearsal in August of
2002, a jam session which resulted in the almost instant writing of ‘Three
Times Thirteen’, the track which bursts open the bands debut recording.
The flood of creativity did not stop there. Within a couple of months,
they had written more than enough material for an album, which they
recorded in early 2003.
Mark recorded the album in Sean’s bedroom, having gained sufficient
engineering experience as the creative force behind Melbourne doom metal
legends Cryptal Darkness (now The Eternal) to do this with utter
competence. The tracks resulting from these sessions were then mixed by Mark
McCormick at St. Andrews Studios and mastered by John Ruberto at Crystal
Mastering.
As showcased by their debut recording, threethirteen’s music encompass
a range of rock styles and dynamics, which makes for interesting and
compelling listening. As the percussive excitement of ‘Three Times
Thirteen’ slides into the soaring melodies of the acoustic ‘All That We Are’,
it is immediatley apparent that threethirteen have more to offer than
the rock-revival clones of the moment. This is soon confirmed by the
blues drag of ‘These Days, As Always’, the upbeat melodic rock of
‘Sunburn’ and ‘Blue’ and the dark electronica of ‘Please’. The band cut their
live teeth at a Christmas party held by the renowned Bakehouse Studio,
and are looking to commence a rigourous schedule of live performances in
the near future. They are seeking a licensing deal to cover the release
of their first album, and are working on material for a second release
to be recorded in the spring of 2003.
